    Lied presents Poundstone
By .Gerry Beta
Senior Reporter
Paula Poundstone, comedienne
extraordinare, will bring her hyper
hilarities to the Lied Center, 301 Q
St., tomorrow night at 8.
Poundstone has proven time and
again that she is a multitalented
individual. From stand-up comedy
and CableACE awards, to writing
and dramatic television, she has
done just about everything. And
she says that’sjust the way she likes
it.
“It’s great because I don’t get
bored,” Poundstone said, “and as
any investment banker will tell you,
it’s good to diversify.”
Her comedy act, which is never
the same twice, also features inter
action with audience members. But,
she said, she doesn’t hold any se
cret to what makes something
funny.
“If I knew that, I’d be so rich and
famous, but it would take all of the
guesswork out.”
One thing she does not budge on
is what she writes or what she thinks
is tunny, and that must be a part of
every agreement she signs,
Pouridstone said.
“My grammar is bad, and my
punctuation is not quite what it
should be,” she said, but it’s up to
her to decide what’s funny.
“It’s my butt hanging out there,
my name on the paper, and I’ll be
the one to decide if it is or is not
funny. I’m the one that lives or dies
by what occurs.”
Part of this cautionary measure
has come from watching bureau
cracy at work behind the scenes of
television, she said.
“Someone might think of a silly
joke for a show, like someone get
ting hit in the face with a cream pie,
and you get 30 people asking,
‘Should it be cream with banana or
cream with yogurt?’”
Poundstone’s concert is spon
sored in part with Lincoln General

Paula Poundstone brings her comedic act to the Lied
Center for Performing Arts Saturday night.
Hospital’s Outreach Program on
Youth Violence, something she said
is important to keep in mind.
“I think it’s safe to say it is the
No. 1 cause of death of youths to
day,” she said. “It’s pretty bizarre.”
Poundstone has also recently be
come a foster mother, which has
had its ups and downs, she said.
“It’s been a real rollercoaster
ride. ”
Making it as a stand-up comic is
difficult, she said, but added that
she has been fortunate to be where
she is today. She credits her audi
ence for her sustained success.
“I’m hardly a household name,
but my following is full of intelli
gent and nice people.”
Another element of success in
stand-up comedy is the venue it’s
presented in, she said.
“If you work in a nightclub, you
j ust see who shows up. But working
in a concert setting makes a big
difference, because the people who
go there are probably familiar with
me.
Edge sponsors music
festival featuring 311
By Jeff Randall
Senior Reporter
If you couldn’t make the road trip
to Lollapalooza this summer, and the
H.O.R.D.E. tour didn’t quite sound
like a good idea, you might want to
check out a music festival a bit closer
to home.
Edgefest, a nine-band concert spon
sored by Omaha/Lincoln radio station
KGDE-FM (101.9) “The Edge,” kicks
off at 1 p.m. Sat
urday at Omaha’s
Ak-Sar-Ben In
field. Tickets are
$12.50 in advance
and $15 the day of
the show, which
will be a go rain
or shine.
KGDE promo
tions director and
on-air personality
Kristy said Edgefest was put together
for a number of reasons.
“We wanted to thank our listeners
for their support over the last six
months, we wanted to throw an end
of-summer celebration, and we just
wanted to get a really good concert in
Omaha,” she said.
And local music fans have re
sponded. More than 10,000 tickets
had been sold as of Thursday, and
Kristy said she expected a sellout by
Saturday.
The lineup for the event was largely
determined by the input of employees
at KGDE.
Headlining band 311 had been the
earliest concern for most, she said.
“311 was our first and foremost
priority, what with them being from
Omaha and having just released a
new album,” Kristy said. “They were
the ones we absolutely had to get.”
The other top band will be the
Violent Femmes, a band that has
gained a large following over its long
running career.
“We knew we had to get a band that
was established and that everybody
would know and love, especially for
our older listeners, and the Violent
Femmes were perfect for that,” she
said.
The remainder of the nationally
known bands—God Lives Underwa
ter, the Urge, the Nixons and Phunk
Junkeez—were chosen by the KGDE
staff by using slightly different crite
ria.
“We looked for bands that we
thought were cool, but that hadn’t
necessarily been heard by everybody,”
Kristy said.
The three remaining local acts —
Heroes and Villains, Shovelhead and %
Secret Skin—were chosen after they
sent copies of their music to KGDE
for “The Basement Tapes,” a weekly
local music show.
Kristy encouraged local music fans
to come out few Edgefest and get in
volved in the music they love.
“This is an opportunity to do some
thing'more with music than just turn
a radio knob,” she said. “But it’s
really all about the music and having
a lot of fun with it.”
Wong Foo
Continued from Page 12
Each of the three undertakes a per
sonal battle while waiting for the car
to be repaired. Vida helps a woman
being battered by her husband,
Noxeema brings out a socially-re
served woman who has a penchant for
. old movie stars and Chi Chi deals
with affairs of the heart.
And they are beautiful, even if Chi
Chi seems to be modeling her behav
ior afW Rosie Perez. When Swayze
kicks in a door, he does it so ... lady
like.
Overall a good film that handles
delicate subject matter with both hu
mor and sensitivity, “To Wong Foo,
Thanks For Everything, Julie
Newmar” is worth the money.
