fvcui icouay, rvuyuoi ou, i v/cr*j uany Muuiaor\an ‘Desperado’ a new western By Jeff Randall Film Critic Here’s a little story ... Mysterious stranger comes into town. Town is corrupt. Mysterious stranger cleans up town. Mysterious stranger moves on to next town. Sound familiar? It should. The above-mentioned storyline has been the standard plot for film west erns since their inception, and it is once again resurrected in Robert Rodriguez’s new film, “Desperado.” Pickingup where Rodriguez’s 1992 surprise hit, “El Mariachi,” left off, “Desperado” follows the vengeful adventures of the nameless mariachi tumed-vigilante (Antonio Banderas). This time around, the Mariachi is in search of Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida),aruthlessdrugkingpin. Still dressed in black, but now armed with a guitar case full of heavy artillery, the Mariachi enters the small Mexican town of Santa Cecilia with visions of revenge on his mind. But when those visions are tempo rarily derailed by a lovely local book store owner, Carolina (Salma Hayek), the Mariachi is forced to decide be tween love and vengeance. With “Desperado,” Rodriguez has breathed new life into a tried-and-true storyline. By blending elements from action and western genres with genu inely interesting characters, he has created a film that feels fresh and new, despite its obvious influences. Rodriguez has done an extraordi nary job as both director and screen writer. He could have easily remade “El Mariachi” with a few minor changes. But he didn’t fall into the frequently tread path of film sequels. He instead made a film that raises the standards of not only his earlier work, but also the standards of the Hollywood western. Banderas does a fantastic j ob as the Mariachi, a character who is tom be tween his gentle, romantic past and his hateful, vengeful present. His move ments throughout the film reflect the mood of each moment, whether dark and brooding or light and comedic. As Carolina, Hayek proves a per fect counter to the Mariachi. And, despite the usual marginal roles of women in action and western films, she portrays a strong and confident character who often steals the show. De Almeida is convincing as the charismatic and suavely ruthless drug Film: “Desperado” Stars: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Joaquim de Almeida Director: Robert Rodriguez Rating: R Grade: A Five Words: Vigilante teaches criminals new tune. lord, Bucho. His portrayal of the frus trated crime boss is by no means revo lutionary, but it’s interesting. Steve Buscemi is excellent as the somewhat timid best friend of the Mariachi. Quentin Tarantino makes a hilarious cameo appearance as a wise cracking pick-up man. Overall, this movie is just plain fun. Rodriguez’s dazzling camera work and the actors’ convincing per formances make for a perfect end to the until-now disappointing summer movie season and, hopefully, a sign of better things to come.
