Fullman eager to show off talent By Trevor Parks Senior Reporter Mike Fullman doesn’t appear in the Nebraska football media guide; in fact no one knew much about him until he showed up at Nebraska’s first fall practice. Since then, Fullman has jumped to second on the depth chart at right comerback behind Tyrone Williams. , Fullman’s odyssey to become a Comhusker began during his fresh man year at Rutgers. In 1993, Fullman started as a redshirt freshman for the Scarlet Knights. He intercepted one pass and re turned it for a 36-yard touchdown. He recorded 36 total tackles, 30 of which were solo stops. Two tackles were for 10 total yards in losses. Fullman also broke up two passes and had a fumble recovery. Grade problems forced Fullman to make a decision. He said he talked to former Nebraska comerback Barron Miles, and Miles told Fullman to check on playing at Nebraska. Miles and Fullman went to the same high school in Roselle, N.J., and Fullman said Miles always had a great impact on his life. “I’ve looked up to him since we were playing Little League,” Fullman said. “He was always leading and talk ing about what I should be doing. I’m basically a guy who just stays quiet and just does what needs to be done.” Since he started playing at Ne braska, Fullman has been called a Barron Miles clone. The 5-foot-7,160-pound junior is almost a spitting image of the 5-8, 165-pound Miles. Being compared to Miles is a great honor, Fullman said. “People are like ‘you are a lot like Barron’ just because we played to gether in high school,” Fullman said. “They said ‘You’re so little, how are you going to go to Division I and play football?”’ Miles’ size wasn’t a problem. Last season, Miles broke up 13 passes and had five interceptions. He was drafted in the sixth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers before injuringhis knee in training camp—an injury that will keep himout for the entire season. Fullman said Miles was doing well and was working hard at rehabilitat ing his knee. Miles wished Fullman luck for the game against the Cow boys. “He just sort of teased ml and is looking forward to see what I can do,” Fullman said. “I’ve got a good feeling deep down inside he’s rooting for me.” Fullman said Nebraska’s 31-0 win over West Virginia in last year’s Kick off Classic helped him make the deci sion to come to Nebraska. Fullman sat out and attended South east Community College last season. Fullman said Jie worked out three to four hours a day at SCC to prepare for this season. This fall he got the opportunity he wanted, and he saidhe’shadnotrouble fitting into Nebraska’s defensive sys tem. “It’s an easy system to pick up because basically we just play a lot of man-to-man,” Fullman said. “At Rutgers we played a lot of zone, and we ran a lot of different defenses.” Now, Fullman will play in his first game since November 1993 when the Huskers play Oklahoma State. Fullman said he was not afraid to play for the first time at Nebraska. “I’m really not sure how I’m going to do against other competition,” Fullman said. “I’m just curious to see what will happen.” American Heart - ■ Associations Fig^r.nc Dsetst Research gave him a future Support Research C'1995 American Heart Associano UNL Rodeo Association Do you have an interest in rodeo?
