Chart-topping Black spurs audience
By Brian Sharp__
Senior Editor
Clint Black is leaving here a better
man, so to speak. -
Black’s single “One Emotion”
-reached the top of
the charts Monday.
The announcement
turned last night’s
concert into a cel
ebration—among
almost 6,000 of
Black’s closest
Camera flashes
K©VieW and spotlightsrico
--cheted around the
arena as Black and his eight-member
band kicked off the night with “A
Good Run of Bad Luck.” Black and
company kept the pace going through
out the hour-and-20-minute concert.
“It’s more like a Saturday night
than a Monday out there,” Black told
the screaming audience, taking a break
from his music. “And that is good.”
- jl.
But Black came to party, and when
the crowd wasn’t lively enough for
him, he let them know.
“Ify’all would’ve just spent a little
more time in the beer garden, I know
you could be louder than that,” he
yelled out, after calling for the crowd
to sing along.
Black flashed his trademark grin
throughout the night, kicking up his
boots and working the crowd from the
rotating stage on the Devaney Center
floor.
At one point during the concert, a
woman near the stage shouted admira
tion for Black’s tight blue jeans.
“Thank you,” he said, laughing.
“They’re my favorite pair.”
Black took the stage at 8:19, fol
lowing a half-hour set by Billy Mon
tana—a young and upcoming star on
the country music scene. Montana sat
alone on stage, a lone singer with his
acoustic guitar.
Black and company rolled through
crowd favorites such as “No Time To
Kill,” “Leavin’ Here a Better Man,”
“Killin’ Time,” “We Tell Ourselves,”
“Walkin’ Away,” and “Summer’s
Cornin’.”
But Black didn ’t let the night go by
without paying tribute to a band which
had a big influence on his musical
career.
The stage stopped turning -as the
first bars of“Desperado” blended with
the blue haze of spotlights. And the
crowd, which had* danced, clapped
and sung along with Black throughout
the night, fell silent and listened.
Black also previewed “A Change
In the Air,” a song he said would be
the next single released off “One Emo
tion.” The album is due out Oct. 4.
Black said his return to Lincoln
and the rest of the tour was meant to be
a departure from earlier tours.
“We wanted to do something on
this tour that was more like our music
was in the early days,” he said. “Sort
of like we were in your living room,
minus the amps.”
Out of the Grey
“Gravity”
Sparrow
Grade: A
OutoftheGreyhasdoneitagain. .
Close on the heels of their third
album, “Diamond Days,” the hus
band-and-wi fe duo of Christine and
Scott Dente have generously put
their all into their latest project,
“Gravity.”
Out of the Grey keeps getting
better. On “Gravity,” we find the
same excellent songwriting that fans
have come to expect, along with a
fuller, more mature sound — both
vocally and musically. -
Scott Dente’s -skillful acoustic
guitar playing is more prevalent
and noticeable on this album. Chris
tine Dente’s singing is just as beau
tiful as it always has been, if not
more so.
Christine and Scott Dente write
almost all their own lyrics and seem
to have a limitless stock of ideas to
draw upon.
Lyrically, the highlight of the
album is “So We Never Got to
Paris.” Ifs a carefree song about
the joy found in marriage, despite
sometimes having to put off one’s
dreams: __
“So we never got to Paris/and
found the cafe of our dreams/but
our table holds a whole world of
memories/no,.we never went to
Venice/and strolled the streets
alone/but we built our worlds to
gether and we got the best of both.”
The duo’s three other albums .
have always been encouraging and
uplifting, and this one is no differ
ent. “Hope in Sight” takes the “best
feel-good song” title for this al
bum:
“I will look up/I will lift up my
head and go on/I will call on the one
who has carried me through/Will
carry me until the end, there’s hope/
there’s hope in sight.”
No amount of writing can cap
ture the sheer delight felt while lis
tening to an Out of the Grey album.
