Stanford Continued from Page 10 “hi a game like that, when you’re up 2-1,"you know you have nothing to lose,” Wendell said. “The momentum just kept shifting.” The third game added to Stanford’s momentum. The Cardinal kept close, never trailing by more than three points, and held the lead on two occa sions before rallying again. Nebraska led 13-11 on a double block by Lisa Reitsma and Weston before the Cardinal scored the final four.pointsofthegametowin 15-13. Service errors killed the Huskers throughout the night. Nebraska com mitted 17 service errors during the match. Pettit said the serving errors were a big key in Stanford’s win. “I’m concerned our experienced people made service errors in critical situations,” Pettit said. “Certainly that was major at the end.” Nebraska did have chances to over come its poor serving night. The Huskers took a 10-3 lead in the first game and after Stanford cut that lead to 12-8, the Huskers went on to win 15-8. In the second game, Nebraska ral lied after the Cardinal took a 9-2 lead. The Huskey eventually pulled to within 13-11, but after a siaeout, Jen McFadden hit the ball long, and Stanford’s Lisa Sharpleiy served an ace to win the game. Although the teams combined for 71 errors, Stanford coach Don Shaw said both teams showed that they were capable of greater success later in the season. “One. thing this match tells us is that Nebraska is a serious contender Travis Heying/DN Nebraska outside hitter Billie Winsett digs a ball against Stanford Saturday night at the NU ' Coliseum. for the national title,” Shaw said. “We’re a serious contender, too.” In Friday night’s semifinal match, Nebraska defeated Penn State, the only team to beat the Huskers last season. The Huskers dominated the Nittany Lions, 15-4,15-3,15-6, becoming the first team to sweep Penn State since Stanford did it at the Mideast Re gional semifinal in December 1992. In the match, Weston set a Ne braska single-match record with a hit ting percentage of .824. Weston knocked down 14 kills on 17 total attacks: The previous best was set by Lori Endicott who hit .800 against Miami of Ohio in 1986. Reitsma hit .476 with 11 kills on 21 attempts. Penn State was led by Terri Zemaitis, who had 12 kills._ As a team Nebraska hit .465, while the Nittany Lions struggled, hitting just .157. Penn State coach Russ Rose said this Nebraska team was better after one match than the one Penn State faced after 31 matches a year ago. “This.is-the best chance they’ve had to win the national champion ship,” Rose said.
