If he doesn’t — he doesn’t.” “Now, Fm going to he working to win the starting job hack.” , BROOK BERRENGER backup NU quarterback Berringer said he would have a new focus in every game and practice. “I’m fine,” he said. “Now, I’m going to be working to win the start ing job back... I’m just going to have to go out and play my game.” Osborne, who jokingly announced the Huskers would start third-team quarterback Matt Turman, said Berringer proved that he was a ca pable quarterback last season. “There are a lot of years that you would love to have Brook Berringer as your starting quarterback,” Osborne said. “That was pretty well demon strated last year. He’s a great player. We’re just blessed to have both of ' them.” . ^ Gill said the players knew Berringer was a capable quarterback, and they weren’t affected by the hype surrounding the decision. “We’ve been relaxed, and I think all the players feel confident in both players;” Gill said. “I think it has all been exaggerated in the media about the big deal in who is going to start. It’s.not- that big of a deal. “We can win with either of them. We’re going to go ahead and play our hardest with either one.” Phillips waits for NCAA ruling By Mike Kluck Staff Reporter * Nebraska I-back Lawrence Phillips’ status for the Comhuskers’ opening game on Aug. 31 against Oklahoma State remains undecided, Phillips, Nebraska’s top I-back, is still waiting for an NCAA decision about his relationship with a sports agent and a recruiter. Phillips has admitted to taking a ride ‘ to lunch with Jack Vemer, a recruiter for a sports agent, in No vember and allowing Vemer to pay for the meal. The ride and the meal could be violations of the NCAA’s rule against athletes accepting extra benefits. The organization could sus pend Phillips or take no action in the case. Associate Athletic Director A1 Papik said Phillips had reimbursed Verner for the food. Papik, who handles the university’s compliance with NCAA regulations, said addi tional information on Phillips’ case was sent Wednesday to the Legisla tive Services office of the NCAA. . Papik said he had hoped the issue would have been resolved earlier this summer, but now'hoped the’NCAA would make its decision before the season opener. Nebraska coach Tom Osborne said he intended to know if Phillips would be eligible before the Huskers play Thursday night. “I think if there was any question, we would certainly get on the phone and find out,” Osborne said. “We’re not going to stick a guy out there if there’s a question about his eligibil ity. We won’t play a player if we’re in doubt to what his status is.” The university sent an initial re port on the incident to the NCAA on Aug. 10. Papik said the first report was sent to the NCAA offices, that handle eligibility and enforcement. “The eligibility office then asked for an interpretation from legislative services, so we went to them with some additional information,” Papik see^his as pretty routine. “Certainly it is our expectation that they (the NCAA) will deliver their decision prior to the first compe tition.” Osborne said the football and ath letic administration staff were coop erating fully with the NCAA investi gation. “Every question they have asked we fiave had a satisfactory answer,” Osborne said. “From what we heard talking to, them on the phone they seem to be satisfied, but you never say never, I guess, when you’re dealing with situations like this.” ' The Associated Press contributed to this report Rose Continued from Page 12 said, “we had a great crowd, and I’d tell people how exciting it was, even after the match, to have the people come up and say nice things to us. That’s not actually how it always works in the Big 10 Conference.” Rose said he would like to have a little more experience, but this team had great potential. “I wouldn’t mind if we had an entirely experienced group,” Rose said. “It’s a great challenge to play anyone right now, no less'than play ing. Nebraska. “In my 17 years at Penn State,” Rose said, “this team has the greatest potential for growth*It’s going to be a great event, and I look at it from the standpoint that I’ll know more about my team.” Parking Problems?
