The Huskers won 5-0. — ■" _— —■* Tom knee ligament ends season for Nebraska soccer co-captain By Mike Kluck Staff Reporter Nebraska’s women soccer coach John Walker felt ill after the Comhuskers’ 5-0 exhibition victory over Queen ’ s University at the Abbott Soccer Park Complex Thursday. . Walker said he was pleased with the Huskers victory, but was.sickened by the loss of Tanya'Franck. Franck, a junior co-captain on this year’s team, tore her anterior cruciate ligament 20 minutes into the first half, team physician Dr. Robert Dugas said. Dugas said Franck would miss the entire season. “It just leaves a sickening feeling in my stomach,” Walker said. “It’s an unbelievable loss; an unbelievably sickening loss for the team and no doubt for her. It has taken a little bit of the glamour off the victory.” Walker was able to find glamour in both the Huskers offense and de fense against Queen’s. The Huskers had 30 shots on goal and 41 total shots against the Queen’s and limited them to only one shot and no shots on goal. . Walker said he was pleased with the intensity of the Huskers, and the majority of the game was played at Nebraska’s offensive end of the field. 1.. 1 .. 7 thought alt of our new players played pretty well.” JOHN WALKER Nebraska soccer coach “I was very pleased with the per formance tonight, and I think for the first game we got contributions, and everybody got to play,” Walker said. “The biggest thing was we wanted to establish an intensity level that was acceptable.” “One of our biggest goals is to never lose games on effort, but to win them. So if nothing else is going right you always have that intangible, that constant, which is effort.” Walker also was^pleased with the blending of the new players and the returners. The Huskers have 10 fresh men players on this year’s roster. He said many of the freshmen were nervous before the game, but they blended well as the game progressed. “I thought all of our new players played pretty well,” Walker said. “We are happy with all of our new play ers.” • i Sandy Smith, one of the new play ers, made a significant contribution. Smith, a freshmen from Hunting ton Beach, Calif., scored two goals in the second half. Junior Kim Ratliff . also scored two goals for the Huskers. Freshmen Becky Hogan added one. Smith said the Huskers had areas to improve on, but she thought they could have a successful season. • “It’s a good team,” Smith said. “I came in and it was like I always playing with the players. They’re good players and easy to get along with.” Smith said Franck’s injury also might provide the Huskers with added incentive for the season. “We are going to miss her, and it’s going to be a hard loss,” Smith added. “It will make us more determined.” The Huskers will-try to use some of that determination in an exhibition game with Vanderbilt Sunday at noon. w J I Here’s the dealJust sign up for the Lincoln Telephone I Long Distance ALWAYS PLAN ^ and get a FREE LARGE VALENTINO’S pizza?
