    ASUN president aims
for year of progress
By Kasey Kerber
Staff Reporter
The Association of Students of
the University of Nebraska laid plans
for a year of progress at its first
meeting Wednesday night in Ne
braska Union.
President Shawntell Hurtgen said
she had many goals for the new se
mester.
“I think one problem is that there
has never been a good link between
colleges and the senators who are
essentially supposed to represent
them,” Hurtgen said. “I think we need
to work on that.”
She also revealed plans for Cam
pus Watch.
, “ASUN is going to lead this pro
gram,” Hurtgen said. “Its goal is to
make students aware and safe. It is
very close to a Neighborhood Watch,
in that it is a group and not an indi
vidual effort.”
The program will make students
more aware of safety services avail
able, such as escort services. It also
will bring attention to safety pro
grams that involve students, such as a
self-defense program.
Hurtgen said she was confident
that the senate could achieve the goals
it set last year.
“I think we’ve touched a lot of our
platform goals already,” she said.
“This is a very active student govern
ment open to all student ideas.”
In other ASUN business, Second
Vice President Brent Goertzen an
nounced that ASUN’s Parking Ap
peals Board would begin meeting
Thursdays at 3:30 p.m.
Government Liaison Committee
Chairman Eric Marintzer addressed
the Legislature’s cuts to university
funds.
“Legislation deleted over $11 mil
lion from the university’s budget,”
Marintzer said. “We worked hard
and managed to get $3 million of it
back. This might not seem like a lot,
but we’re still pushing.”
The senate also, discussed summer
accomplishments, including work to
resolve a management class mix-up, to
increase student parking on East Cam
pus and to improve communication
between colleges and ASUN represen
tatives.
