Huskers a hit with young players
By Todd Walkenhorst
Staff Reporter
The Nebraska soccer team may
have faced its toughest challenge of
the season last night, trying to keep
ISO children entertained.
Elementary school soccer players
participated in the first annual “Meet
and Beat” the Huskers clinic.
Assistant coach Megan Bechtold
said the kids participated in different
stations that emphasized a particular
soccer skill.
“We have little competitions set up
at six stations,” Bechtold said. “We
tried to incorporate everything they
do in soccer.”
The individual stations included
five-on-five competition, shooting on
goal and heading. Husker soccer play
ers were on hand to participate with
the clinic participants.
Ten-year-old Mallory Carter said
her coach dragged her team out to the
complex. But she said she would be
back again next year.
“Our coach called us a couple of
hours ago and asked us if we wanted to
go,” Carter said. “It’s pretty cool.”
Glynna Ridge, a fifth grader from
Prescott Elementary said she had no
problem scoring a goal against the
Husker goalie.
“We scored a goal over there,”
Ridge said. “I don’t think she just let
us score on her.”
Ridge said that she would be in
attendance for many of Nebraska’s
home contests this year.
“I’m going to get a season pass, so
I can go to all of the games,” die said.
“We love soccer.”
Casde Willis also enjoyed the clinic
and the chance to meet the Huskers.
“This is cool,” Willis said, “meet
ing the Huskers is really cool.”
In addition to the instruction, free
pizza and pop were served to the par
ticipants.
“They’re having a blast,” Bechtold
said. “A lot of them have forgotten
about the pizza.”
All of the Huskers participated in:
the activities.
“Everyone had a real open-minded
attitude,” Bechtold said. “It was our
chance to give back a little to the
community, and hopefully they will
come out to the games.”
Huskers to scrimmage for final time
From Staff Reports
The Nebraska football team will
hold its third and final full-contact
preseason scrimmage today before
playing at Oklahoma State on Aug.
31.
Coach Tom Osborne said the scrim
mage would be 85 plays and would pit
the top offensive unit against the top
defensive unit for 1/3 of the plays.
The rest of the scrimmage will be
used to let scout teams simulate Okla
homa State’s offensive and defensive
schemes.
Osborne reported three significant
injuries Tuesday. Tight end Mark
Gilman strained a knee, and wingback
Jon Vedral and rush end Grant
Wistrom suffered pulled groins.
Osborne said he wasn’t too wor
ried by the injuries.
“They are nothing that I can see
that will carry on for too long.”
Also on Tuesday, a new Nebraska
depth chart was released with a fe^r
major changes since the end of spring.
Sophomore running back James Sims
has moved from the fifth spot to the
third spot at 1-back. Freshman Ahman
Green is listed at the fourth spot.
Mike Fullman, a 5-foot-7, 160
pound junior transfer from Rutgers,
has moved up to No. 2 on the depth
chart at right comerback.
Leslie Dennis has switched from
the two spot at left comerback to No.
3 at right comerback.
