Woman sues NU, claims harassment By Jeff Zeleny Senior Reporter A former UNL student filed a discrimination lawsuit against the university this summer, claim ing her right to receive a fair education was violated by the Nebraska Athletic Department. Peter aarah Katherine Redmond, 22, alleges she was raped twice by Comhusker football player Christian Peter in 1991. Redmond, who now livesin Littleton, Colo., said the ath letic department failed to listen to her complaints. Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne has denied he and other university offi - cials ignored Redmond’s allegations. Redmond’s civil lawsuit, filed in June in U.S. District Court in Lincoln, alleges that the university violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sexual discrimination and harassment. “She was continually subjected to sexual harassment from students and faculty,” the law- • suit states. “This harassment included a pattern of overt sexual harassment, as well as a pattern of intentional failure to investigate her allega tions of sexual assault ... thus permitting her attacker to remain a highly visible athlete in the University of Nebraska community.” Peter repeatedly has denied the allegations, Osborne said. The University of Nebraska, the NU Board of Regents, the state of Nebraska, Peter and former Nebraska football player Ken Bellow are named in the suit. The suit claims Bellow was with Peter during at least one of the alleged assaults. Richard Wood, NU general counsel, said Redmond’s claims had no legal merit. Larry Trattler, Redmond’s attorney, said the lawsuit was similar to many Title IX lawsuits filed across the country. “This is something that happens a great deal with football programs around the country,” Trattler said from his office in Littleton, Colo. “You can’t have a different set of rules for ‘You can't have a different set of rules for athletes. ” m LARRY TRATTLER Attorney athletes” Redmond said she delayed reporting the alleged assaults because she was afraid and humiliated. She alleges that the first assault occurred Aug. 31,1991, in Peter’s Harper Resi dence Hall room and the second two days later in Redmond’s Smith Hall room. She reported the assaults to police in Decem ber 1993. The university is expected to file an answer to the lawsuit in U.S. District Court by the end of September, Trattler said.
