Otis Redding “The Very Best of Otis Redding, Vol. 2” Rhino Records Grade: A ^ When Otis Redding’s plane plunged into the icy waters of Lake Monoma on Dec. 10, 1967, the musical world lost one of its most valuable assets and one of its most timeless talents. Otis Redding, who is most widely known for “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” was, first and fore most, a showman. When he took the stage or stepped behind a studio microphone, he was there for the fans. But what made him truly great was his ability to relate that love for his fans through the often heart wrenching and suspenseful words and music he created. Now, nearly 30 years after his death, Rhino Records has released the second volume of Otis Redding’s “Very Best of...” col lection. The true challenge in creating a greatest hits compilation lies in se lecting not only the tunes that fans will remember, but also the ones that mean the most to the artists who performed them. And Rhino Records has done just that in both volumes of “The Very Best of Otis Redding,” pro viding a thoroughly satisfying mix of familiar tunes and soulful bal lads. Every song in this compilation displays a different side of Redding’s personality and a differ ent batch of musical influences to go along with it. “That’s What My Heart Needs” opens the album with a desperate cry to a lost love, and it is followed by a series of songs in which Redding explores the intricacies of love as no other artist can. “Hard to Handle” reveals a con fident, even boasting, Redding, tell ing the object of his desire just how wonderful he is, while “I Love You More Than Words Can Say” is a soft and sentimental plea to a loved one whom he cannot live without. Covers of songs by artists as varied as Sam Cooke (“Change Gonna Come”), the Beatles (“Day Tripper”) and James Brown (“Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”) show that Otis was more than a performer of music, he was a lover of it in all shapes and forms. The raw and unsystematic ap proach Redding used in his perfor mances is another aspect of his leg endary status that deserves men tioning. His gravelly voice, liable to spring into a shout at any given moment, and the unrelentingmusi cians with which Redding sur rounded himself served only to in crease the emotional bankroll he put on the table every time he per formed. Otis Redding’s music remains today as a testimony to his nick name, “the King of Soul,” and as an unattainable mark for which subse quent musicianscan aim. Congratu lations to the people at Rhino for putting together a compilation that helps to show why. —Jeff Randall Classified 02 Appliances 400 Roommates 05 Bicycles 410HousingWanted 10 Books 420 Rooms/Rent 13 Clothing 430 Houses/Rent 16 Computers 440 Duplex/Rent 20 Furniture 450 Apartments/Rent 30 Jewelry 460 Summer Housing 40 Misc For Sale 470 Mobile Homes/Rent 45 Musical Instruments 480 Vacation/Rent 46 Office Furniture 490 Homes/Sale 50 Pets 55 Photo Equipment 60 Sporting Goods 65 Stereos/TVs 500 Adoption 12 E0** ^change 505 Alterations 4 Sewing 90 Vehicles 510 Automotive 515 Bicycle Service 520 Bridal 525 Caterina 200 Rides 528 Child Care 203 Spring Break Trips 530 Cleaningtoundry 205 Career Events 531 Cleaning/Ftouseholds 210 Announcements |35 Computer Service 01 ^ liAAtinnc 540 entertainment £19 meetings c^c /vf* ^ua. 220 Greek Affairs SS & jJSSnL 230 Student Government 550 S^tttTa^itness 242 Personate 553 insurance 242 Pinning 4 555 Instruction/Tutoring Engagements 558 Job Placement 245 Lost 4 Found 560 Lawn care 250 Wanted 565 Legal Services 260 Fundraising 573 Music Exchange 270 900 Numbers 575 Photography 578 Pregnancy 580 Printing 4 Copying 582 Recycling 300 Help Wanted |{jt j®sus 310 Child Care 588 Tanning 320 Work Study Jobs 590 Tattooing 330 Summer Jobs 593 Travel 340 Internships 595 Typing 4 Resumes $3.25 per day for 15 words on individual student and student organization ads. $4.50 per day for 15 words on non-student ads. $.15 each additional word. $.75 billing charge.
