Childs doesn’t mind juggling act
just as long he’s on playing field

Clinton Childs spent his spring
practices splitting time between I-back
and fullback.
Heading into fall, the senior run
ning back has decided which position
he prefers — the playing field.
“We haven’t decided exactly what
I’m going to be doing yet,” Childs
said.“I’ll probabiy beat fullback most
of the time. It doesn’t matter to me. I
just want to play and want to help the
team. I just want to be out there doing
whatever it takes to help us get an
other title.”
At OmahaNorth, Childs rushed for
1,428 yards in 1990 and 1,495 in
1991. His career high school total of
3,947 yards was only 18 yards shy of
the Class A rushing record set by
former Husker running back Calvin
Jones.
Tlie Blue Chip All-American con
sidered only Nebraska, even though
he said he knew competition would be
tough.
All the I-backs return from 1994,
and Cory Schlesinger is the only full
back gone from a backfield that rushed
for 340 yards a game.
Childs, a senior, will battle senior
Jeff Makovicka for playing time at
fullback.
“There’s going to be the competi
tion anywhere you go,” Childs said. “I
liked the competition here because
it’s some of the best. By moving to
fullback, I’m not backing away from
any competition. I think it will just add
another dimension to our offense.”
After sitting out the 1992 season,
Childs rushed for 96 yards as a sopho
more. Last year, he split time with
Damon Benning behind Lawrence
Phillips, and totaled 399 yards and
five touchdowns.
At 6-fect, 215 pounds, Childs said
he didn’t plan to change his punishing
running style.
“That’s always going to be my style
of running, whether I’m playing full
back or I-back,” Childs said. “I’ll never
quit running like that. I guess that had
a lot to do with why the coaches thought
I could switch to fullback.”
Osborne said he expected to use
Childs’ experience in a position filled
with depth and youth.
Childs said juggling two positions
hadn’t been difficult, but he wasn’t
completely familiar with fullback yet.
“1 have I-back down pat right now,
but I need to put the finishing touches
on fullback,” Childs said. “But I’m- -
getting fullback down pretty good,
too. Overall, it’s going to help me out
the most. Hopefully, playing fullback
will help out the team as much as it’s
going to help me out.”
