Scott Bruhn/DN Tom Osborne manages a smile during the Media Day press conference Aug. 8. Osborne enters his 23rd season as Nebraska’s football coach. Osborne coy as ever By Derek Samson Senior Reporter Nebraska coach Tom Osborne has kicked off many seasons with media day, but never as the defending nation al champion. But Osborne preferred not to talk about the Comhuskers’ chances of re peating. Nor did he want to discuss the HeismanhopesofquarterbackTommie FrSzier and I-back Lawrence Phillips. Instead, Osborne just wanted to get it over with. “I don’t have anything in particular I need to talk about today...I won’t get a real feel for this team for die next few days, then I’ll know more,” Osborne said at the Aug. 8 media day. “Unfor tunately, this press thing is misplaced. It should be two or three weeks later. I guess I’ve got to sit here, and you have to take notes. We’re all victims of the situation. I don’t want to be here very bad, and you don’t want to be here very bad.” i-— Osborne said the 1995 media day felt the same as those of the past and so did his off-season. “I’ve signed more autographs, but other than that, it hasn’t been much different,” Osborne said. “There are a few more people that want interviews, but that’s about it. I still went fishing four times, and I still spent some time with my family.” But Osborne, who is entering his 23rd year as Nebraska’s coach, did have to answer some questions about football. Osborne has argued for a playoff system but said it was a dying issue. “I think that has been pretty well answered by the Presidents Commis sion,” Osborne said. “They studied it last year and said 'no.’ I don’t see any point in even talking about it for the next four or five years. We keep talk ing and talking about it, but I think the only thing we should talk about now is how to improve the system that is in place.” Improving the system required com mitment to the bowl alliance, Osborne said. The Orange, Fiesta and Sugar bowls are in the the alliance, but the Rose Bowl matches the Big Ten and Pac-10 champs until 2001, Until then, it is possible the nation’s top two teams will not play in a nation al title game. “The best improvement I see is to get the Rose Bowl involved in the alliance,” Osborne said. “Then you have a chance to get one and two together. We have to worry about how we’re going to decide who is one and two. Do you want to have a writers’ poll or do you want to have a coaches’ poll, or do you want to go with some kind of computer ranking where there will be some objectivity?” “I think we have a good team,” Osborne said. “We think we’ll be very good. We’re going to play well, and we’re going to play hard. I realize that’s a very mundane answer, but I don’t know.” [Perfect 10 Nails j California Fashion Nail Design |3601 O Street * 476-1006 I unlimited month $30 10 sessions $20 15 sessions $28 $2 OFF of Fill (Reg. $15) | SCOFF of Full Set (RegS30) j " $2 OFF*of j Manicures (RegJSlO)_) $3 OFF of I Pedicures (Reg. $15) | COUPON EXPIRES 09/30/95_j STUFF YOU GOTTA HAVE owmgarm Lamps $7.95 Adjustable lamps perfect for independent studying or night-time reading T’lve^e r-eaddcf is a di^es-exce, 13th & Q Street • 476-0111 BACK TO SCHOOL HOURS AUGUST 14-18 & 21-25 MONDAY - FRIDAY 8:00 am - 9:00 pm We've got a lot in store, town under.
