By Gerry Bettz_

The first week of the semester her
alds an incredibly average week ol
new video releases. There’s some
thing for everybody: a western, a kids’
flick, a romance and an adventure. The
pick-of-the-week will satisfy fans ol
schlocky martial arts films.
“Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Ad
ventures of Pecos Bill” (PG) — Not a
bad little film, even if it is rathei
predictable. Noah (Nick Stahl) doesn’t
like work Or die tail tales his father tells
him.
However, it is those tall tale charac
ters — Pecos Bill (Patrick Swayze).
Paul Bu yan (Oliver Platt) and Johr
Henry (Roger Aaron Brown) — that
come to the boy’s rescue when he is or
the run from an evil land baron.
“Tall Tale” is a lot of fan, for bod
kids and adults.
“Circle of Friends” (PG-13) — A
I multi-faceted love story starring Chris
O’Donnell (“Batman Forever”) and
X A
newcomer Minnie Driver. “Circle of
Friends” is a definite teaijerker.
Benny (Driver) is a college fresh
man who falls for die local popular
boy, Jack (O’Do
nnell). Because
she isn’t as attrac
tive as the girls he
usually goes out
with, she isn’t no
ticed right away.
Great stuff here,
and al 1 performanc
es are terrific.
“The Quick and
the Dead” (R) —
Yuck. “Evil Dead” director Sam Raimi
takes a shot at the Old West.
Focusing on a small town with a
big-time gunfighting contest, the all
star cast includes Sharon Stone (who
has a nude scene ... again), Academy
Award winner Gene Hackman and
Academy Award nominee Leonardo
DiCaprio.
The script, acting and everything
else in this movie sucks canal water.
Better to watch milk curdle than to '
waste money on this flick.
“Tank Girl” (PG-13) — A visual
treat, yes. Worth seeing, not really. -
Lori Petty plays a woman whose
friends are killed by the evil Water an 3
Power people, but she escapes and
commandeers a tank to exact her re
venge.
Forget this one. Rent a tape on life
insurance instead.
PICK-OF-THE-WEEK — It ain’t
Bruce Lee or Steven Seagal, but it’s
still cool martial arts stuff.
It’s “The Big Brawl.”
Director Robert Blouth (“Enter The
Dragon”) mixed an anything-goes
fighting tournament, gangsters, roller
derby and Jackie Chan (in die lead role)
to make a wonderful movie with a great
blend of comedy and martial arts.
The film also stars Jose Ferrer as the
top gangster and Mako as Chan’s train
er, but “The Big Brawl” won’t be the
easiest movie to find.

However, it is worth looking “for, if
not iust for the roller derbv scene.
