You're First Here" ^ ^•iMiNVIMrFX Sci-fifilm proves to be a \Species’ of its own Movie: “Species” Director: Roger Donaldson Stars: Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Forest Whitaker, Natasha Henstridgc Rating: R Grade: B Five Words: Suspense, special effects make film. By Joel Strauch Editor Hostile alien contact has always been a favorite theme for Hollywood. That’s why it takes a unique twist to make a successful “Alien” movie. “Species” is definitely unique. In 1974, the world’s largest radio telescope broadcasted a message to the rest of the galaxy about what life on earth was like. Twenty years later, we received a response. The reply included an alien DNA sequence and some Time-Li fe instruc tions on how to mix it with human DNA. An attempt was made and a new species of life was developed, which has no other purpose except to repro duce and eradicate human beings. After this new life form called “Sil” escapes from a government labora tory, a crack team of scientists and trackers is called in to hunt it down. Sil (both human and otherwise) is played by Natasha Henstridge, and the disturbing lack of ethics that she displays is one of the most eerie as pects of the movie. At one point, in order to test the differences between herself and nor mal humans, she cuts off the thumb of a helpless woman after seeingher own dismembered thumb grow back. (I guess she has it in for hitchhikers.) Her non-inhibitions, incredible strength and predatory nature make her an interesting chase for the eccen tric location team. Michael Madsen (“Reservoir Dogs”) plays to the hilt the role of Preston “Press” Lennox, a smart mouthed government assassin. Forest Whitaker is believable as the empath both because of his above average acting ability and.that little nervous tick that his eye always docs. Marg Helgenberger is Dr. Laura Baker, a molecular biologist who quickly figures out Sil’s intentions. And Alfred Molina (“Maverick”) gets to be the extra from the original Star Trek away teams. You know, the guy who wears the red suit that nobody’s ever seen before and every body knows he’s gonna die. Even though his death is a given, there are a lot of unexpected moments that leap out at the audience in the film, giving it a very intense feel. In addition, the creature effects, designed by H.R. Giger of “Alien” fame, are very well done. Sil, in hu man form, alien form and every stage in between, is both beauti ful and terri fying. “Species” is a new effort on an old premise, and is quite entertaining. But the lackluster ending takes away some of the suspense and adrenaline thaf, has been built up. A must for sci-fi fans, though nor mal humans might have a better time getting their outer space fix at “Apollo 13.” |E>o | | Candles • Lingerie • Baskets • Bath ho% off Pu - -'A $6-95 Valued KSgJSH^ •>T,v-\^ S^8r Receive lO oz g of Redken Shampoo ~ 2 •• 3 CO C\^:L™ . „-. - a. 3 with a Women’s » Ss®*0 Cut & Style for $7.50 f Cb//ege of Hair Design "*»* rnr, r». vara m», »h -m m rn ■«•*. nu wn >mw m w. anew im cm.
