Localbars hotspots to cool off

It’s Wednesday night, you’re done
studying and it seems there’s nothing
to do in Lincoln. Believe it ornot, there
are some bars in town that minors can
get into legally, which beats staring at
the wall waiting for reruns of “Coach.”
Guitars & Cadillacs, (5400 O St)
This is a predominantly country-west
ern bar, but it occasionally throws in
some rock and dance music. It also has
a low cover charge of $3. For the
under-age crowd, Guitars offers an all
ages night on Sunday until 9 p.m. At
9 p.m., everyone under 19 is kicked
out and die 19-and-over crowd can
dance until close to the best regional
C&W acts around.
The Hurricane, (1118 0 St.) Every
night but Thursday offers a 19-and
over event with a minimal cover
charge, usually about three bucks.
Tuesday is “Sound Check Live,” a
showcase for local talent, and Wednes
day is “Planet Night,” where 104.1
The Planet FM radio station broad
casts live from The Hurricane with the
best in modem music.
A word of warning: hands are
stamped with an ink that’s really hard
to get off. Minors, don’t try to buy.
You won’t fool anyone.
The Pla-Mor Ballroom, (6600West
O St.) is another place for the 19-and
over crowd for country-western danc
ing. The cover charge is $5 and the
doors open at 7 p.m. for free dance
lessons and close at 12:30 a.m. Also,
The Pla-Mor brings out a favorite re
gional act, The Rumbles, once a month
for an all-ages show. The charge for
that is $5.
P.O. Pears (322 S. 9th) allows mi
nors in during certain hours (daytime
and early evening), but the exact cut
off time varies from day to day. Call
for best results. It has a sand volleyball
court, cool decorations, and the burgers
at this place are well worth the trip.
The Royal Grove, (340 W.
Comhusker Hwy) offers a lot of vari
ety for the rock ‘n roll and alternative
crowds. The Grove, in cooperation
with radio stations 106.3 The Blaze
and 104.1 The Planet, stages lots of
low-dough shows throughout the year.
The charge is usually fairly low; around
$3 for local and regional acts and $10
for some of the more widely-known
bands.
For those over 21, there are several
bars in the downtown area alone, with
some of the more popular ones within
a two-block radius of one another,
including The Watering Hole (13210
St), Duffy’s (1412 O St.), and the
Brass Rail (1436 O St.). Many of these
establishments offer lunch and dinner
specials, trademark drinks and a lively
social atmosphere.
