Lincoln’s radio stations: Tune ‘em in and play ‘em loud By Ann Stack Staff Reporter and Gerry Beltz Features Editor On the long trek down Interstate 80, as you gaze at the cattle and the prairie, you might have lost your favorite radio station a few miles back. You reach under your seat, and grab the first tape you find and throw it in. It turns out to be the Statler Brothers Greatest Hits (both of them). After cruising into Lincoln through endless miles of static, al most anything sounds good. But wait — you don’t want just any thing! Maybeyouwant VemcaSalt! Or Michael Bolton! Or Bad Com pany! Or White Zombie or Garth Brooks or....well, whatever. But how do I find what I want on the dial, you ask yourself? Well, campers, here it is: the scoop on Lincoln’s radio selection. For the boot-scootin’ crowd, there’s KFGE-105.3 FM (Froggy) and 96.9 KZKX (96 KX) to get your fill of country stars like Alan Jack son, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire. If Madonna, Boys II Men and Firehouse float your boat, then KFRX 102.7 FM is where you want to set the dial. For the classic rockers, KTGL 92.9 FM (The Eagle) and KLDZ 95.1 is the way to go. The Eagle plays the well known acts, while 95.1 plays the more obscure stuff, with a touch of disco added now and then. You can also pick up Z-92 (92.3) out of Omaha. It’S got a classic rock format similar to The Eagle’s. Another classic rock station in Omaha is CD 105.3, but for some reason it’s extremely difficult to pick up here in Lincoln. KQKQ 98.5 FM (Sweet 98) from Omaha is a hybrid of classic and new rock, mixing stuff from the 70s and 80s with the music of the 90s. •For the serious headbangers, 106.3 KIBZ-FM (The Blaze) has what you want, from late greats like Queen and the Scorpions to newer acts like Stone Temple Pilots and Primus. The Blaze is also known for its on-the-edge morn ing show, featuring die team, ‘Tim and The Animal”. KKNB 104.1 FM (The Planet) and KDGE 101.9-FM (The Edge) are the places to be for modem rock, like Belly, Hole or Smashing Pumpkins. Another modem rock station is 93 K ROK, 93.3, out of Omaha. Again, this one is kind of hard to pick up. If you want some light rock, like Billy Joel, Richard Marx or Mariah Carey, KEZG-107.3 (The Star) and KEFM-96.1 (Lite 96) out of Oma ha is where to find the light tunes. Of course, don’t forget UNL’s own KRNU, 90.3 FM. Operated by broadcasting students, you’ll find just about anything and everything (xi die dial. Tune it in and crank it up. Also, for classical and jazz mu sic, tune in to Nebraska Public Radio (90.9-FM). It’s mostly clas sical during the day, and the jazz is usually at night and on weekends. Now, if you happen to be stuck in a car with only AM radio, don’t despair. The AM airwaves are ac tive as well. Your choices include KFOR 1240 AM, an adult contemporary news-weather station, and KLIN 1400, a talk-news station which features talk shows like Rush Limbaugh. KLIN also broadcasts the Nebraska sporting events (a very important tic-bit come Comhusker football time). There it is, a rundown on what to tune in on. Happy listening! That brings us to the staple food group of student life, the pizza. Count ing carry-out and quick service loca tions in the area, there are four loca tions. The most obvious is Pizza Hut at 239 N. 14th St. Very acceptable prices and actually a better place to dine in, call ahead if you want to get in and get out. Take advantage of specials to get the most of Pizza Hut. The Plump Tomato Pizza Compa ny in the Reunion building offers pizza by the slice and is also a good place to grab a doughnut in the morning. Good pizza at good slice sizes and good prices, the Plump Tomato is one of the better dining options in the area. Valentino’s-To-Go at 232 N. 13th St. is a good place to grab something to eat and run. A daily lunch special is available and little time is wasted wait ing for the pizza to come up. The prices are quite reasonable and die service is fast and friendly. Lazzari’s at 1434 O St. is a New York style pizza place that has excel lent food at good prices and a great atmosphere. Open late on weekends, it is a great place to finish a night out That just leaves the not-so-easily categorized fast-food places. Arby’s stands at 1435 Q St. and has the roast beef sandwiches that Arby’s is famous for. The prices are fairly reasonable and the food is good. ‘Nuff said. There are two George’s Gyros lo cations, otie in the Reunion and one downtown on the comer of 14th and O streets. With classic Greek gyros at good prices, George’s offers custom ers something a little more exotic than a burger and fries. Boston Market at 16th and Q streets offers rotisserie chicken in a deli-style atmosphere. It has a broad menu selec tion including turkey and many side dishes. The prices are a bit high and although it’s kind of tough on the budget, you get what you pay for. In this case, the food is excellent. Well, that’s it to the basic guide to fast-food locations near campus, and they all should be explored. Don’t necessarily take the reviewer’s word for it, try them for yourself. They are all worth checking out. One Here Time Fine Apparel and Home Furnishings on Consignment Come to see us for desks, tables, mattresses and quality clothing.
