A quick bite is a hop, skip and jump away for students
By Chad Johnson
Staff Reporter
Before class, at lunch or on your
way home, if a quick bite to eat is
needed to get you through the day,
there are a number of fast-food restau
rants on and around campus that can
help.
The classic fast-food place is the
burger joint, and three are in the area.
In the Student Union is a Burger King.
The food is no more or less remarkable
than any other Burger King in the U.S.
and the prices are competitive. The
only down side to the BK in the Union
is that it gets extremely busy during
lunch and the wait gets to be long.
At the comer of 14th and Q is
Wendy’s. They offer OK food at rea
sonable prices and a good selection of
value menu items which means eating
for under $5 is possible. The service
tends to be a bit slow but drive-thru is
available. Caution: this is a site to be
avoided if hurried on a football Satur
day.
The remaining burger place strad
dles the border between fast food and
sit-down style restaurants. Rock ‘N
Roll Runza at 14th and P streets offers
a good menu and an unusual, ’50sstyle
drive-in atmosphere that has servers
on skates and ’50s rock ‘n’ roll on the
jukebox. Drive-thru is available and
call-in orders are accepted for a quick
exit. Only down side: the prices are a
bit higher than most places.
Sandwich places seem to be popu
lar in tiie area with three businesses at
four locations. Subway leads the way
with two locations, one in the Union
and one in the Gunny’s building at
13th and Q streets. Subway offers good
serving sizes, a good menu selection
that goes beyond sandwiches and rea
sonable prices, and the service is usu
ally quick.
Schlotzsky’s at 1201 P St. is a dif
ferent kind of sandwich place with its
unique style ofbread baked fresh at the
store daily. Good selection of sand
wiches and soups, a nice place to go for
a short escape from campus. The pric
es are a bit high for the serving size a
customer receives.
HMS Brown Baggers at 1228 P St.
is a more traditional kind of deli-style
sandwich place. A nice, secluded loca
tion and a great place to dine in, Bag

iecent prices.
Chinese fast food is not in great
abundance on or near campus, but it is
available. In the Nebraska Union is
Imperial Palace Express, with some of
the tastiest food and fastest service in
the Union. To also soothe your hunger
pains is Eggroll Palace in die Reunion.
Mexican-style fast-food places are
also available. There are two Amigos
locations nearby. One is in the Union
and another is at 14th & “Q” streets.
They have a good menu selection but
are a bit higher in the price range than
most places. The Amigos at 14th and
Q streets is very busy on weekends
because it is open until 3 a.m.
The other Mexican-style fast-food
place is Taco Bell at 13th & “Q”
streets. Taco Bell has acceptable food
at cheap prices. The service runs a bit
slow and their variable ‘we’re open
when we want to be’ hours get to be
irritating. Beware of cold food but
considering that for two bucks you can

The Food Court, located in the Union, is one of many places on campus where students can grab
a quick snack or meal.
