Pitcher shows hitting ability By Derek Samson Senior Reporter Nebraska pitcher Angela Blackwood seized the opportunity to help out her own cause. But she didn’t need any help. The freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla., pitched a three-hit shutout in Nebraska’s 6-0 victory over Wichita State in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader. Just in case something happened on the mound, Blackwood went 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs. pitching, that I’m able to get it back. It takes some of the pressure off.” The only pressure Blackwood faced in the first game — which was her fourth shutout of the season — came in the fifth inning. With Nebraska leading 2-0, Wichita State loaded the bases with its No. 9, 1 and 2 hitters coming to the plate. Blackwood struck out all three hit ters to get herself out of the inning. The pressure was much different in Nebraska’s 4-2 win in the second game. Blackwood was 1 for 3 at the plate with an RBI as a designated hitter in the second game, but that wasn’t her biggest contribution. With no outs and the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Blackwood was called in to end the Shockers’ threat. She didjust that, striking out twoof the next three batters, while the other was forced out at home. The save was Blackwood’s first of the season, while the win improved her record to 18-9. Golf team signs on top-notch prospect From Staff Reports The Nebraska men’s golf team signed an in-state prospect to a letter of intent, Coach Larry Romjue an nounced Thursday. Lincoln High golfer Steve Friesen signed a letter of intent to play at Nebraska next season. This spring, Friesen has placed in every tourna ment. He finished first at die Grand Island Invitational and at Lincoln High’s quadrangular. r Romjue said he expected Friesen to be a valuable asset to the Husker team. “Steve’s had an outstanding high school career, and he is an excellent addition to our program,” Romjue said. The Comhuskers are coming off a seventh-place finish at the Big Eight Championships last weekend. Friesen should be able to help improve on that. “We’ve got a young team right now, and Steve gives us another ex tremely talented player,” Romjue said. Friesen placed fifth at the Class A State High School Tournament last year, and has also qualified for and played in numerous junior golf tour naments across the country. Lincoln High golf coach Sam Sharpe said the Huskers were getting an outstanding golfer and individual. “They are gettinga very good, well rounded player,” he said. “He is a complete player, not only physically, but mentally and he is very dedicated to the game.” Nebraska to play host to national wrestling duals From Staff Reports For the fourth straight year, the Nebraska wrestling team will play host to the Cliff Keen NWCA National Dual Meet Championships.
