The Huskers will have to replace Wiegert, wno was drafted by St. Louis, on the offensive line. Offensive line questions remain By Mitch Sherman Senior Reporter A hard-hitting, aggressive month of spring football has left Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne satisfied, even though several questions remain unan swered. Going into the spring, Osborne said, the CornhusKers looked thin at several spots, including the of fensive line, SAM linebacker and left comerback. The Huskers lost two All Americans off their line from last year—Zach Wiegert and Brenden Stai. Wiegert had his jersey retired last Saturday at the spring game. “I think our offensive line was the big question coming in,” Osborne said. “I don’t think we are overwhelming there, but I think we can put an offensive line out that can play pretty well.” The No. 1 line of Chris Dishman, Aaron Taylor, Aaron Graham, Steve Ott and Eric Anderson, Osborne said, should be solid. Developing depth, Osborne said, is still a top priority. The departure of Troy Dumas, Osborne said, left the Huskers thin at SAM linebacker. Redshirt fresh man Jay Foreman has emerged as a possible starter. Foreman is even on the depth chart with Larry Arnold. Osborne said he was pleased with the small post-spring injury report. The victims Saturday included I-back Damon Benning (turned ankle), split end Riley Washing ton (sore Achilles’ tendon), I-back James Sims (knee bruise) and quar terback Matt Turman (badly bruised left hand). Top I-back Lawrence Phillips didn’t play in the spring game after aggravating both of his hamstrings earlier this month. Also absent because of an injured foot was Michael Booker. Booker iscompetingwith Leslie Dennis and Eric Stokes for the starting left comerback spot, left vacant by the departure of Barron Miles. SAM linebacker Sean Noster (shoulder surgery) and free safety Tray Crayton (tom finger ligament) also missed Saturday’s game. Rover Mike Minter played the first half ofthe spring game. Minter, a junior from Lawton, Okla., is recovering from a tom anterior cruciate ligament suffered Sept. 8 against Texas Tech. Minter was the fastest player on the team be fore injuring his knee. During spring testing, he had nearly returned to full speed, run ning a 4.55-second 40-yard dash. Last winter, Minter ran a 4.41 said Minter still was having knee problems. Defensive coordinator Charlie McBride said he was concerned with Tony Veland’s knee. The se nior free safety, who started 11 games last season, is still feeling the effects of a tom patellar ten don, injured more than a year and a haffrago. McBride said Veland was ham pered during the spring game. “It’s going to be a big factor to find a good backup for Veland,” McBride said. “If he isn’t able to make it through a spring game, I don’t see how he is going to make it through the season. That’s a big concern, because right now, I don’t think that knee will hold up this year.” SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE $8.95 I Shampoo, Condfflon I & Cut j (Reg $11.90) No Appt.
