Just prior to the game, both teams
lined up along the base paths and
tipped their caps toward the stands in
a gesture of reconciliation following
the longest strike in baseball history.
“Thanks to the loyal, patient and
knowledgeable baseball fans of South
Florida,” the public address announcer
said.
The crowd jeered.
Then came the first pitch of pro
baseball’s 126th season, albeit 23 days
and 2 minutes late. At 7:37 p.m. EDT,
Florida’s John Burkett threw a fastball
that was fouled off.
The crowd cheered.
It was baseball’s best moment in 8
1/2 months.

The next inning with one out, Gloria
Von Rentzell hit her sixth home run of
the season. Tobin Echo-Hawk fol
lowed Von Rentzell with a single and
moved to second with a stolen base.
Then Viola hit another home run to
center to give the Huskers a 6-4 lead.
The Nebraska defense turned a spar
kling double play in the seventh, and
Blackwood struck out Shannon Hutson
to end the game.
Viola said after coming alive in the
first game, Nebraska was going to
have a big second game.
Nebraska had five of its first six
batters of the second game score as the
Huskers exploded for five runs in the
first inning.
Amy Offenbacker started the first
inning with a single toright and then
stole second base. After Von Rentzell
grounded out, Echo-Hawk hit an RBI
single to center to knock in
Offenbacker.
After Viola walked, Blackwood
singled to left to score Echo-Hawk.
Then Viola scored on Karla Knicely’s
single.
Blackwood scored on a bloop single
by Rachel Dunham. The Huskers’
scoring closed out with Knicely scor
ing on a sacrifice fly to right by Sherry
Allcom.
In the second inning, the first four
Husker batters scored. Von Rentzell,
Echo-Hawk, Viola and Blackwood all
scored.
Viola had a base hit that scored
Von Rentzell and Echo-Hawk. She
broke the Big Eight record for RBIs
—previously set by Oklahoma’s Chris
DeLuca last year—with the two-run
velle said sweeping the double
header over Drake was important for
the Huskers ’ NCAA Regional chances.
“If we drop games to Drake and
other non-conference games, then we
might not get as strongly considered,”
Revelle said. “To me they’re insur
ance wins.”
