Filmmakers club revived
From Staff Reports
This semester, Junior ChrisBell
took a defunct campus organiza
tion and gave it new life.
The University ofNebraska-Lin
coln Future Filmmakers and Screen
writers was inactive for more than a
year, Bell said, until he realized
that aspiring directors and writers
needed a forum to meet and discuss
ideas.
“Through talking with people,
there seems to be a real interest in
film production,” Bell said, “but
there is no place to congregate.”
After learning there was such an
organization at one time and that it
had been abandoned, Bell took the
initiative to revamp the club and
appeal to new members.
To attract new members, the
Future Filmmakers and Screen
writers will havea free screening of
“Raising Arizona” in the Nebraska
Union Wednesday at 7 p.m.
“We wanted to create an infor
mal setting where we could get to
know people interested in the club
and show them what we’re about,”
Bell said. “So we picked a movie
that everyone is bound to like. We
wanted to get to know each other in
a film setting.”
The club has no membership
fees and anyone is welcome to the
free screening. Bell said the club
had two main goals: to share ideas
and to find equipment and talent to
realize those ideas. A major func
tion of the club is to network and to
see what others are doing in the film
medium, he said.
“Before the screening we’ll be
showing the pilot to MTV’s ‘The
State,’ directed by a member of our
organization,” Bell said.
“That more than anything shows
that aspiring filmmakers from all
backgrounds can achieve their am
bitions and can create their dreams
in film.”

“We go out and look for things to
write about,” she said. “We don’t sit
around and wait for ideas to pop into
our heads.”
Conversations, newspaper head
lines and daily life interspersed with
humor often serve as inspiration for
the duo’s songs such as “Why Am I
Painting the Living Room?” and “F
Word Song (A Chat With Your
Mom)”
Nebraskans will get the chance to
see this Madison, Wis., duo in action
at the Walton Trail Company, 118th
and A streets, Friday night at 7:30.
Their performance is sponsored by
the Lincoln Association For Tradi
tional Arts Inc., a non-profit commu
nity arts organization. Tickets are
available for $8 at the Walton Trail
Company and through LAFTA.
