Golfers aim for regional meet
By Andrew stmaa
Staff Reporter
As the spring golf season comes to
an end, Nebraska men’s golf coach
Larry Romjue would like nothingmore
than to extend the season by a few
weeks.
The Nebraska men’s golf team
travels to Hutchinson, Kan., today
to compete in the Big Eight Champi
onships for a spot in the NCAA Re
gional meet.
A§. in past years, Oklahoma State
and Oklahoma are the favorites with
Kansas not too far behind.
Oklahoma State is the top-ranked
team in the country, and Oklahoma
is also in the top ten, so there is
definitely some very good competi
tion in this conference,” Romjue
said.
Romjue said he expected the rest
of the conference to battle for the
other remaining positions.
“Honestly, in all the years I’ve been
here, I’ve never seen the third through
eighth so even,” he said. “It’s going to
be real tight for a lot of those spots.”
. The Huskers will need a strong
performance if they want to stake their
claim to one of the seven spots in the
NCAA Central Regional.
“We didn’t help ourselves as far as
quali fying for regionals,” Romjue said.
“If we want to get into the regionals,
we will have to finish ahead of Kansas
State and Missouri.”
The Huskers finished fifth at the
Big Eight Championships last season
and are trying to finish in the top half
of the conference for the first time
since 1989.
“It’s going to be interesting,”
Romjue said. “We’re playing at one of
the finest golf courses in the country,
with some of the best teams in the
nation.”

ence.
“Iowa State is a team we should
have beaten four out of five times,
instead of the other way around,”
Dalton said.
Center fielder Mel Motley provided
all the offense Winget needed with an
RBI single in the third inning to score
Cliff Durham.
Two batters later, Eugene Jenkins
drove in Darin Erstad and Motley to
give the Huskers a 3-0 lead.
Jenkins, a junior right fielder from
Bellwood, 111., went 3 for 3 on the day.

Grace (58.375), Kieffer (57.975) and
Jason Christie (57.775) each posted
career highs on Friday night.
“ You look at that,” Allen said, “and
you know the system works. All those
guys peaked at the right time. Look at
Rick Kieffer, he was at his best at the
end of his career.”
After a season-high 230.45 on
Thursday, in which the Huskers hit 89
percent of their routines, Nebraska
bettered that performance the next day,
hitting more than 90 percent, Allen said.
“That was the best second place
I’ve ever had,” he said. “I’ve had
some disappointing second places but
not this time. We were there all the
way. To win, you had to beat Ne
braska”
The all-arounders were not the only
Huskers shining in Columbus this
weekend. Other career bests included:
freshman Don Kinison (9.35 on still
rings and 9.45 on high bar); freshman
Jim Koziol (9.65 on still rings); s9pho
more Ted Harris (9.9 on still rings);
and freshman Lev Schieber (9.4 on
high bar).

“It’s great to just know if some
thing happens ... happens to me that
Stacie won’t have to carry the load by
herself,” Blackwood said.
With Raimondi on the mound, the
Huskers began their comeback. Ne
braska scored two runs in the top of
the fifth when Viola and Blackwood
scored.
In the top of the seventh Nebraska
had the tying run on third with one out.
The comeback began when Sherry
Allcora singled to right. Rachel
Dunham followed with a walk on four
straight pitches.
Allcom scored from second on a
Heather Hanselmann’s single to cen
ter. Amy Offenbacker followed with a
single to left center that scored
Dunham.
Then Nease relieved Jeannie Lobel
and struck out Gloria Von Rentzell.
Nease showed control problems, walk
ing Tobin Echo-Hawk on fourpitches.
With the bases loaded, Viola
grounded out to Julie Osborne to end
the comeback bid.
Revelle said she noticed Viola had
problems.
“She struggled with that pitcher
psychologically all weekend,” Revelle
said.
That was evident as Viola struggled
against the Cyclone pitcher, going 0
for 2 in the first game and 0 for 3 in the
final game.
