Jackson plays an undercover cop with an axe to grind in “Kiss of Death.” ‘Kiss’ leaves ‘Pulpy’ residue By Chad Johnson Him Critic Barbet Schroeder is one of the best directors in neo-noir films. In “Kiss of Death,” he uses the film noir feel to create a twisted side of life most viewers are never unlucky enough to see. David Caruso has made the jump from the small screen (“NYPD Blue”) to the big screen as Jimmy Kilmartin, an ex-con trying to make a new life for himself. One night his old Hfe comes calling in the form of Ronnie (Michael Rappaport), and he is pulled back into the criminal life. He’s busted and takes the rap for the family, following the code of silence. . While in Sing Sing, he learns that his wife has been killed and starts planning his revenge. That’s when the film really gets interesting. Set up as an informant, he falls in league with Calvin (Samuel L. Jackson), who wants to bust the family and their city-wide car-boosting ring. Nicolas Cage plays Little Junior. The public has grown so used to Cage playing nice guys or good-hearted bunglers, they might be shocked to see him in this truly evil role. His portrayal of a crime lord with a really bad attitude is kind of like Ice Cube crossed with Dennis Hopper in “Blue Velvet.” He actu ally pulls it off and the viewer is likely to forget the nice guys he has played in the past. Jackson continues his string of excellent performances. He has fol lowed up his Academy Award nominated appearance in “Pulp Fic tion” with a role as Calvin, an un dercover cop with an axe to grind. Caruso does a respectable job, for a first-timer, but seems to get considerable help from the heavy presences of Cage and Jackson. His dark lighting and heavy mood combined with the crime and double-crosses create a tangible mood that actually weighs on the audience. “Kiss of Death” is perfect for those who need to get a quick “Pulp’Mike fix: A good old taste of violence with a light touch of hu mor folded in. ‘Lyrical Steel’ sings at Sheldon From Staff Reports An exhibition of sculptures by Brian Wall, who created the “Cripple Creek” sculpture located in the out door sculpture garden, is now open at Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, . - '‘Brian Wall: Lyrical Steel” is an exhibition of 25 sculptures and draw ings by the renowned British-Ameri can artist. Wall is known for his abstract welded steel sculptures1, said Daphne Deeds, a curator at Sheldon. She said he used remnants of industrial con struction—I-beams, bars and irregu lar plates — in his works. The sculptures in “Lyrical Steel” are more complex, colorful and mod est in scale than Wall’s previous works, she said. Wall's previous works tended to be sparse, hard-edged and minimalist.
