Senior Reporter It’s the Bard’s birthday celebra tion, and no spankings are allowed. William Shakespeare’s birthday will again be celebrated, albeit a bit early, on the University of Nebraska Lincoln campus, starting today. “Nobody’s really sure when his actual birthday is,” said English pro fessor Stephen Buhler, “but they do know he died on April 23, which is also the celebration of the Feast of St. George, the patron saint of En gland." Today from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 pm. there will be a beginning-to-end read ing of Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets in the English Department Library, 229 Andrews Hall. This event is free and open to the public, both for reading and listening. The celebration also will include a 15-minute version of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” staged by Buhler and Peg Sheldrick, a Lincoln performer, at about 10 a.m. Music will be provided by Sweet Will and the Saucy Jacks. This act, led by Buhler, sets Shakespeare’s sonnets to a variety of musical styles, includingcountry, rock and blues. “There’s some early rock, and some doo-whop rock,” Buhler said, “and there’s a couple of grunge as well.” The Shakespeare celebration will carry into dead week, with return per formances from the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express. “The Tempest” and “Hamlet” will both be staged at the Studio Theatre in the Howell Theatre on 12th and R streets. “The Tempest” will be staged April 28 at 8 p.m., and “Hamlet” will be staged April 29 at 2 pjn. Both performances are free. The Shenandoah Shakespeare Ex press makes the theater presentation of Shakespeare unique by using simple costumes, few props and sharp deliv ery that keeps the audience riveted, Buhler said. Last year, when the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express stopped in Lin coln to perform “Much Ado About Nothing,” the group incorporated the Cole Porter tune “Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off’ into the perfor mance, and this year’s performance of “The Tempest” may hold a simi lar surprise. “I hear they will be incorporating some Ike and Tina Turner into their performance,” Buhler said.
