Towing fees to rise; permits stay same
By Stacie Renner
Staff Reporter
Student parking fees for the 1995
96 school year will not increase, the
UNL Parking Advisory Committee
decided Tues
day.
But students
will face a $10
increase in tow
ing fees, from
$25 to $35, and
an additional
$25 fee if the vehicle must be dollied.
The towing contract for the year
has been awarded to Lincoln Land
Towing Inc., 410 W. P St. A change in
contracts was considered, but Lincoln
Land Towing was the only company
able to fulfill contract requirements
with current facilities, committee
member Viann Schroeder said.
She said security also was an issue
in choosing the company.
Daryl Swanson, chairman of the
committee, said even though fees
would not go up next year, an increase
for the 1996-97 school year still was a
possibility.
Swanson said not increasing per
mit fees was in part the fulfillment of
a commitment made to students last
year when fees were raised.
Last year’s increase was part of a
bond issue approved by the Board of
Regents to pay for parking improve
ments.
Some of those improvements are
scheduled for this summer. The larg
est project is planned for area 1,2 and
20 lots, primarily commuter lots, at
19th and R streets.
Paving those lots will provide bet
ter parking and improve the appear
ance of the south side of campus,
Schroeder said.
Other large projects this summer
include improving the lighting on the
north side of East Campus Loop and
resurfacing lots 3 and 20 at the Harper
Schramm-Smith complex.
Also at the meeting, Joan Konecky,
coordinator of electronic reference
services with the University of Ne
braska libraries, was elected the new
chairwoman of the committee.
