The Huskers also defeated Augustana and Northern Iowa. And in the first game Sunday, Nebraska defeated Drake for the second time before being elimi nated. Zubor’s pitching game leads to Husker win By Tony West Staff Reporter Nebraska pitcher Brian Zubor said he knew what he had to do when he entered Sunday’s baseball game against Louisville. Throw strikes. And that’s exactly what the 6 foot-3 freshman left-hander from Riverside, 111., did in his first start as a Comhusker. Zubor had a career-high eight strikeouts in his first complete game to improve his record to 2-0 on the season with the 11-2 win over the Cardinals. The Huskers improved their record to 25-14 with a sweep in Sunday’s doubleheader. Nebraska defeated Wyoming in the second game 3-1. “I just knew if I threw strikes, the game would come to me,” Zubor said. Zubor gave up seven hits and no earned runs in the nine-inning per formance to improve his ERA from 9.00 to 5.32. The earned run average was a good determinant on seeing how he had handled the transition from high Wins Continued from Page 7 “Our hitting has been carrying us for a while,” said Dalton, who was 6 for 9 and stole four bases on the day. “We needed somebody to step up from a pitching aspect. Brian and Jason did a great job, because our bats were pretty much silent compared to what they have been.” Nebraska struck first against the 11-22 Cowboys when Erstad scored on a single by Sears in the bottom of the first. Wyoming knotted the game Frazier Continued from Page 7 “Early in the scrimmage, the of fense was pretty crisp and fairly domi nant,” Osborne said. “As the scrim mage went along, the offense started to make some mistakes and the de fense played well. So I think both of them had their moments today.” Later in the scrimmage, Frazier had another chance against the first team defense, but this time the de fense stopped the offense in three plays for minus-7 yards. Osborne said it was difficult for players on both sides to overcome the familiarity with each other. school to college baseball, he said. Zuborwas24-4inhisthreeyears | at Fenwick High School and had 77 strikeouts in his senior season alone. “At first (coming out of high \ school), you’re kind of worried,” Zubor said. “But afterwards, you realize that it’s just like facing the best hitters in high school all the time. “Now, I’m starting to feel more comfortable, and I feel the coaches have more confidence in me.” Coach John Sanders said he was pleased with Zubor’s performance. “Brian did a good job of mixing up his pitches,” Sanders said. “He j had command of the fastball inside j and used his off-speed effectively. “To have someone go nine in nings in a stretch of games like that is very encouraging.” ■ But Sanders said he was never unsure of Zubor’s ability to per form that well. “It wasn’t surprising,” Sanders said. “I knew he was capable of that.” Sanders said that either Zubor or junior Jason Allen, who picked up the win in the second game Sunday, could enter the starting rotation. at one in the top of the fourth, but Nebraska came back to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning. Designated hitter Alvie Shepherd —who also picked up his fourth save of the year by pitching a perfect ninth inning against the Cowboys—scored on a single to left field by Dalton to give the Huskers a 2-1 lead. Allen, a junior from Papillion who attended Seminole (Okla.) Commu nity College, entered the game with a 16.00 ERA. The 6-1 right-hander held Wyoming in check all day, surrender ing only four hits and one run in eight innings. “It’s always difficult out here be cause you know each other so well,” he said. “Offense, in some cases, has an advantage because they can spot a blitz quicker. “On the other hand, if you audible, you would have to be pretty dumb not to know what the audibles are, par ticularly when it’s a blitz. So in some ways it isn’t a true test.” Freshman Joel Makovicka led all rushers with 69 yards on six attempts. On the second series of the game, Makovicka broke loose for a 38-yard run against the first-team defense. The defense, however, held Makovicka and the rest of the third-team offense to only a field goal.
