EATING HELP REDUCE THE RISK OF CANCER. It can also help you reduce your weight. Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 “Strangers from the Universe” Matador Records Grade: B Ifnothingelse,ThinkingFellers Union Local 282 has a name that is easy to remember. For the last six years or so, the Fellers have been one of those bands you rarely hear of, but hear plenty about. Besides, you hear the name once and it’s ingrained in your memory forever. The Fellers have one of those grab-bag sounds that contains a little bit ofpretty much everything y ou ’ ve ever heard thrown into the mix. As a result, this collection of 14 songs, sound snippets and ambient musi cal phrases sounds more like a tightly packaged compilation by a dozen different bands than it does a single band’s album. But a definite pop sensibility underlies that eclectic sonic bar rage. Catchy sing-along melodies poke above the surface in nearly every song. The quirky nature of the Fellers’ music is somewhat difficult to pi geonhole. One can’t tell whether it springs from a sly cynicism or a genuine appreciation for the cot ton-candy side of pop culture. But songs with titles like “My Pal the Tortoise” are definitely worth lis tening to. Urban Dance Squad “Persona non grata” Virgin Records Grade: B Back once again is Urban Dance Squad, die alternative rap/funk band whose biggest hit so far has been “Deeper Shade of Soul.” While never quite reaching the level of balance that propelled “Deeper Shade,” Rudeboy, Magic Stick, Sil and Tres Manos have returned in a solid state to give a good performance. The ingredients are a little mixed. The rap is not as good as the Beastie Boys’. Urban Dance Squad’s gui tars are louder and more distorted than Shooty’s Groove. At times they echo the “Give It Away” sound of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Music is not about being com pared to other bands, however. It is about whether the music is original and if it appeals to its audience. The Squad has an appeal, but it sometimes gets lost in the delivery. The first track, “Demagogue,” is a good song, but the guitar is much too loud compared to the vocals. “Alienated” is similar except with good music and poorly written lyr ics. These are not the norm, j ust some inconsistencies. “Good Grief!” highlights some terrific funk bass playing, for example. The lyrics are for the most part very stylized, providing an insight into suburbia. In “Chitchat,” we hear, “Hang out in the suburbs ifyou got the guts ... nowadays you can’t tell who’s a hoodlum.” You will never forget what these guys represent, the quest to be like their hardcore idols. Another affirmation comes in “Selfstyled” when Rudeboy states, “Call me a poseur. I am,” leaving no question where he stands. All in all, “Persona non grata” is solid but spotty. A good disc if you have nothing else to buy. —Greg Schick Various Artists “The Brady Bunch Movie” Soundtrack Milan Records Grade: B+ “You kids have no idea what it takes to impress a chick,” says Greg Brady in “The Brady Bunch Movie.” “Brady Bunch” wannabes, this album is the way! There’s even a really groovy poster that comes with the compact disc. It’s happening in a far-out way. Almost all the music heard in the movie is on the soundtrack. Sorry, the “Charlie’s Angels” theme isn’t there. (That’s the music that Marsha and Jan tried to be teen models to in the movie.) The popular Brady songs “It’s A Sunshine Day” and “Keep On” are on the soundtrack as sung by the original Brady kids. The new Brady kids didn’t really sing their own stuff, with the exception of Christo pher Daniel Bames (Greg) on “Till I Met You,” so it seems natural to put the original Bradys on the soundtrack. The soundtrack’s presentation is great. A couple of cool Brady tunes are heard and then a sample from the movie like Jan (Jennifer Elsie Cox) saying “Marsha did it again... Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!” or the wisdom of Mr. Brady (Gary Cole) saying “And as a wise man once said, wherever you go, there you are.” Aside from the Brady songs — including a grunge version of the original television-show theme — other highlights of the soundtrack are “Girl,” the modernized classic sung by the Monkees’ Davy Jones, “Venus” performed by Shocking Blue and “Supermodel (You Better Work)” by that she-man, RuPaul. —Rick Roth FOR SALE 000s 02 Appliances 05 Bicycles 10 Books 13 Clothing 16 Computers 20 Furniture 30 Jewelry 40 Misc.
