Article starts sit-in, shut-down
CHICAGO (AP) — The use of
“M-B,” police talk for “male black,”
in a story about a fight at a campus
party has led to a sit-in that is shutting
down the student newspaper at DePaul
University.
Last week, dozens of DePaul stu
dents, most of them black, stormed
the office of the weekly DePaulia,
ordering staff members to leave.
About 20 students have been holed
up ever since, with no resolution in
sight.
DePaul’s president, the Rev. John
Minogue, asked newspaper staffers
and protesters to reach an agreement,
then suspended publication of
Friday’s edition.
University spokeswoman Denise
Mattson said officials saw the situa
tion as a learning experience for the
students and had no plans to end the
protest.
The protesters demand the ouster
of DePaulia’s editor in chief, 21
year-old Zack Martin, who is white.
They also demand that the paper pub
lish weekly articles on minority con
cerns and that the school do more to
curtail racism and punish offenders.
The takeover came after weeks of
bickering over the Feb. 17 front-page
article about a brawl at a campus
party. The story quoted a police re
port describing “several M-B’s throw
ing chairs and trash into the crowd.”
Black students complained that
the excerpt from the police report,
the only mention of race in the story,
was irrelevant and perpetuated nega
tive stereotypes about blacks.
Following the complaints, the
newspaper published an editorial say
ing the two reporters who covered the
fight did not intend to write an unbal
anced or insensitive article.
Martin was unsure when the news
paper would resume publication but
said it wouldn’t be this week.
Racial tensions had been simmer
ing at the Catholic school on
Chicago’s North Side before the pro
test broke open the issue. Just under
10 percent of the nearly 16,800 stu
dents are black. Seventy percent are
white.
“The DePaulia is representative
of a bigger evil that DePaul Univer
sity possesses and that’s institution
alized racism,” said Eric Wright, a
20-year-old sophomore among those
occupying the newspaper’s basement
office.
The editor in chief, who has re
sisted demands to print an apology,
said he didn’t initially see a problem
with the story because it quoted di
rectly from a police report.
