Bands to play
for Amnesty
International
By Jeff Randall
Staff Reporter
Local bands Slowdown Virginia,
Plastik Trumpet, Polecat and Com
mander Venus will perform Friday at
the Culture Center,
LIVE
333 N. 14th St. •
ihe concert is a
fund-raising
event for Am
nesty Interna
tional. Amnesty
International
chapters at both
tne university oi
Nebraska-Lin
coln and Lincoln
High School helped organize and
promote the concert.
' Jamie Williams, co-president of
the UNL Amnesty chapter, said the
schools’ cooperation was the result
of both a move toward more coopera
tive projects and a lack of funds for
Lincoln High’s chapter.
“They (Lincoln High) were hav
ing problems getting enough money
to run things,” Williams said, “and
we decided that we could help out.”
Garth Johnson, vocalist for Plastik
Trumpet and a member of UNL’s
Amnesty International chapter, said
seeing a large number of people col
laborate on promotion and organiza
tion had been a good experience.
“It’s been a joint effort between
both schools and the bands,” Johnson
said. “Everyone’s out there putting
up posters and getting the word out.
“We’ve been trying to build up to
this for quite a while.”
Contacting and encouraging bands
to perform at the show were easy
tasks, Williams said.
“We were basically friends with
most of the bands, so it came together
pretty easily,” she said.
Although good music will be the
main draw for most of the concert’s
audience members, Williams said,
there will be an Amnesty Interna
tional information booth and a series
of brief lectures between bands for
educational purposes.
“It’s going to be a good opportu
nity to get information about Am
nesty, and it’s going to be a good
show,” she said.
Friday’s show will begin at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $3.
