road trip with wins

The Nebraska softball team swept
a doubleheader from Missouri-Kan
sas City on Monday to improve to 26
14.
In the opening game, which the
Comhuskers won 8-0, Stacie Stafford
threw a one-hit shutout.
Melanie Raimondi made her first
start of the season in the second game,
holding the Kangaroos to two runs in
the 10-2 win. The Huskers were com
ing off of a weekend split of four
games against Kansas.
“I thought we played well consid
ering this made six games in three
days for us,” Coach Rhonda Revelle
said. “It was a good end to the road
trip.”
With two home runs Monday, the
Huskers tied the season record for
home runs with 24, equaling the mark
set by the 1979 team.
Nebraska recruit named
first-team All-American

Western Nebraska Community
College’s Bernard Gamer has been
named first-team All-American by
the National Junior College Athletic
Association.
The Nebraska recruit helped lead
Western Nebraska to a third-place
finish in the national tournament last
month.
Gamer, a 6-foot-7 forward from
Many, La., averaged 17.5 points and
nine rebounds for the 36-4 Cougars.
Western Nebraska was the con
solation champion of the national
tournament in 1994, when it went
32-7.
Gamer signed a national letter-of
intent during the November early
signing period to play for Nebraska.
Teammate Bobby Jackson, a 6
foot-1 sophomore guard, was named
to the second team.
Drills go on
despite rain,
cold weather

The Nebraska football team
worked out for two hours Mon
day in helmets and shoulder
pads at Memorial Stadium.
Coach Tom Osborne said
practice went well despite the
cold temperatures and rain.
Quarterback Matt Turman
returned to practice and prob
ably will not have arthroscopic
surgery on his knee as was pre
viously thought, Osborne said.
Also, guard Steve Ott prac
ticed after getting hurt in
Saturday’s scrimmage.

and I-backs Clinton Childs and
Brian Knuckles were held out
of practice.

Lifter of the Year were an
nounced Monday.
The five candidates for the
honor are: tight end Mark
Gilman, defensive back Mike
Minter, defensive lineman
Christian Peter, outside line
backer Jared Tomich and
comerback Tyrone Williams.
The award will be presented
this Saturday. '
Alberts

“I’ve been blessed in so many
ways,” he said. “Coach (Tom)
Osborne gave a little kid out of Iowa
a chance to come and play football.”
And now Alberts wants to give
children here a chance. He wants to
help pay back those people in the
Husker program who have helped
him along the way. Alberts said the
Colts made him their No. 1 draft pick
to contribute both on the field and in
the community.
“One of the main reasons they
drafted me is because they knew I
could d%well in that arena,” Alberts
said. “Even now 1 am still active in
once a week working with the DARE
program in Indianapolis.”
In addition to working with kids in
the Drug Abuse Resistance Educa
tion program, Alberts is organizing a
golf tournament in Indiana to help
fight illiteracy.
Alberts has quickly emerged as a
role model to young people in Ne
braska and Indiana. Despite being
thrusted into this position, Alberts
said he realized that it was a label he
had to live with.
“Regardless of what people say,”
Alberts said, “you are going to be a
role model whether you want to be or
not. You can be a good one or a bad
one. That’s just the way I look at it.”
