Husker defense prevails again
By Derek Samson
Senior Reporter
For the second straight major scrim
mage, the defense owned the offense.
The Nebraska offense could manage
only three touchdowns in the 124-play
scrimmage at Memorial Stadium Satur
day. And only one of those touchdowns
came from the first-team offense.
On the first drive, the offense, led
by both Tommie Frazier and Brook
Berringer, took the ball 65 yards, and
Damon Benning capped the drive off
with a 1-yard touchdown run.
But that was pretty much the end of
the offensive threat.
Coach Tom Osborne said he was
more concerned with the effort than
the scoring.
“The effort was good, and the ex
ecution was a little better than Wednes
day,” Osborne said. “The hitting was
pretty good. The defense played very
hard, but the offense was a little spo
radic.”
Osborne said he was glad to see the
competition level as high as it was
Saturday.
“They were hitting pretty hard,”
Osborne said. “They’re all competing
for jobs. When you’ve got enough
depth that there is competition, no
body can afford to sit back.
“Even with some ofthe key players
returning — Frazier’s got his hands
full, and I don’t think Lawrence
Phillips has anything locked up —
they ’re all competing for jobs. They’ve
got to play hard.”
I-back Brian Knuckles and quar
terback Matt Turman did not scrim
mage because of injuries.
Osborne said Turman, who hurt his
knee last week in practice, will try to
practice Monday. If Turman still has
trouble, Osborne said, he will prob
ably have his it scoped.
Huskers triumph over CSU Saturday
By Tony West
Staff Reporter
The Nebraska track and field teams
were able to withstand the cold weather
to sweep the competition at the Ed
Weir Track on Saturday.
The men took top honors in a field
of four teams by defeating second
place Colorado State 64-30. The
Comhusker women outscored Colo
rado State 111.5-64.5 to gain the team
title.
Even though both teams won by
sizable margins, Coach Gary Pepin
said he thought performances could
have been even better if it had been
warmer.
“The weather really hurt,” he said.
“It’s hard to get into the atmosphere of
the meet when you’re just struggling
to stay warm.”
But some Husker athletes didn’t
have much of a problem.
Former Nebraska football tight end
Eric A1 ford, who joined the track team
last week, finished second in the long
jump with a leap of 23 feet, 10 1/4
inches.
Husker junior Zane Mai won the
long jump competition with a mark of
24-2 1/2.
On the women’s side, junior Kathy
Travis Miiller won both the 100-meter
anuzuu-meier runs wun limes oi 11.50
and 24.4.
Senior Theresa Stelling had a per
sonal best in the 800-meter run with a
time of 2:16.63 to finish fourth. She
also won the 1,500-meter run in a time
of 4:29.15.
But Pepin said this meet was not
about putting up the best marks.
Pepin said the level of competition
wasn’t as high as it could have been,
and some people were held out of
some events to give them a rest.
“I think a meet like this... you have
to just look at each individual on the
team and hope to see some individual
improvement,” Pepin said.
