Sen. Jim Exon in 1996, U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey
said Saturday during the Democratic Party’s
annual Jefferson-Jaekson Day Dinner.
“I’m encouraging several people to consider
running, but he would be the strongest candi
date,” said Kerrey, who heads the Democratic
Senate campaign committee.
Nelson said he was leaning against entering
the race. “I haven’t set a time frame for a
decision,” Nelson said. “I know it can’t go on
indefinitely.”
Nelson had no decision or announcement
following a meeting Sunday with Kerrey.
At a reception before Saturday’s dinner,
Nelson also found himself being wooed by
Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, who
outlined the reasons why Nelson should run.
Nelson and Daschle said their conversation
centered on the important role that a moderate

Democrat like Nelson could play in forming a
bipartisan approach to the nation’s problems.
Daschle was the keynote speaker at the Demo
cratic dinner, taking aim at the Republican’s
Contract with America and referring to the
GOP’s $187 billion tax cut proposal as “deja
voodoo economics.”
The tax cut will benefit the rich with more
than 50 percent of it going to 12 percent of the
country’s wealthiest Americans, Daschle said.
He vowed to fight the proposal, which has
passed the U.S. House.
Daschle credited Republican leaders, par
ticularly House Majority Leader Newt Gingrich,
with grabbing the public’s interest through the
powers of communication.
“Democrats haven’t taken advantage of the
opportunity to inform the people. In order to be
competitive, we have to understand the power
of communication and its complexity,” Daschle
said.
Daschle said there had been several issues,
such as unfunded mandates and regulatory re
form, where Democrats and Republicans had
worked together during the first 100 days.
