Nelson called best bet for filling Exon’s seat OMAHA (AP)—The political courtship of Gov. Ben Nelson continues to heat up as key Democratic leaders whisper sweet words of senatorial victory in his ear. Nelson remains the party’s best chance for keeping the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Jim Exon in 1996, U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey said Saturday during the Democratic Party’s annual Jefferson-Jaekson Day Dinner. “I’m encouraging several people to consider running, but he would be the strongest candi date,” said Kerrey, who heads the Democratic Senate campaign committee. Nelson said he was leaning against entering the race. “I haven’t set a time frame for a decision,” Nelson said. “I know it can’t go on indefinitely.” Nelson had no decision or announcement following a meeting Sunday with Kerrey. At a reception before Saturday’s dinner, Nelson also found himself being wooed by Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, who outlined the reasons why Nelson should run. Daschle was the keynote speaker at the Demo cratic dinner, taking aim at the Republican’s Contract with America and referring to the GOP’s $187 billion tax cut proposal as “deja voodoo economics.” The tax cut will benefit the rich with more than 50 percent of it going to 12 percent of the country’s wealthiest Americans, Daschle said. He vowed to fight the proposal, which has passed the U.S. House. Daschle credited Republican leaders, par ticularly House Majority Leader Newt Gingrich, with grabbing the public’s interest through the powers of communication. “Democrats haven’t taken advantage of the opportunity to inform the people. In order to be competitive, we have to understand the power of communication and its complexity,” Daschle said. Daschle said there had been several issues, such as unfunded mandates and regulatory re form, where Democrats and Republicans had worked together during the first 100 days. Gaza Strip bombings kill Israeli soldiers KFARDAROM, Gaza Strip (AP)—Islamic militants opposed to the Israeli-PLO peace pro cess killed six Israeli soldiers and wounded dozens of people in two suicide bombings Sun day near isolated Jewi sh settlements in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin said he would continue talks with the Palestine Libera tion Organization despite calls by right-wing opponents and some of his allies to halt them in protest. In the first attack, a van parked by the main Gaza highway exploded near an Israeli bus at about noon, killing six soldiers, said Brig. Gen. Doron Almog, Israel’s commander in Gaza. Officials said 34 people were wounded. - Two hours later, about six miles up the road, a Palestinian car drove into an Israeli convoy of military and civilian cars and exploded, Almog said.
