Appeal of ‘Don Juan’ goes far beyond seductive come-ons By Matt Woody film Critic Capes went out with the Roman tic period. But both make a strong come back in the star-driven “Don Juan DeMarco.” Director Jeremy Leven com bines some of the best talent of Hollywood past, Marlon Brando, and Hollywood present, Johnny Depp, for the core of his Francis Ford Coppola-produced film. Depp plays a young man who calls himself Don Juan DeMarco and believes he is the legendary seducer of the same name. Through out the movie, he dresses like a swashbuckler, complete with mask and cape. Shortly into the film, he is about to commit suicide after his true love has rejected him. He is talked down from his perch atop a New York City billboard by Brando’s Dr. Jack Mickler. Following the suicide attempt, Don Juan DeMarco is given a man datory 10-day stay at the local psy chiatric hospital. As fate would have it, the doctor assigned to Don Juan during his stay is Mickler, whom Depp’s character calls “Don Fran cisco, the greatest psychiatrist in the world.” It is at this point when the movie begins to really do what it set out to do. Over the course of the sessions between the two, the audience learns of the fantastic life that Don Juan DeMarco has led, as he recounts romance after romance to Mickler. While the doctor knows that he can’t really be Don Juan, Depp’s character hold firms in his own re ality. He acknowledges that he very well may be in a psychiatric hospi tal in New York City, but says he prefers his more creative view of the world. And in that view, he is a guest at the villa of Don Francisco. . Courtesy of New Line Cinema Geraldine Pailhas and Johnny Depp star in “Jon Juan DeMarco.” Movie: “Don Juan DeMarco” Rating: PG-13 Stars: Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway Director: Jeremy Leven Grade: B+ Five words: Depp’s character brings romance alive. But having Don Juan (not your ordinary loon) as a patient affects Mickler in ways that take even him — the greatest psychiatrist in the world —- some time to figure out. He tries to rekindle the fire in his marriage from the few embers left, wining and dining his wife anew. Depp is perfect as the storied romancer, both in shape and in mind. With his performance here, he has firmly established himself as one of the best younger actors in the busi ness, building on other solid, recent work—“Benny and Joon,” “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” and “Ed Wood.” Brando brings his trademark style to the character of Mickler. Even though these days Brando is larger than some foreign cars, onscreen he’s still larger than life. Director Jeremy Leven has cre ated a solid work, one that is helped greatly by its quality editing. But the film succeeds on all counts, in telling a story of adven ture and romance and proving that the spirit of Don Juan lives on in the hearts of lovers yet today. $3.00 per day for 15 words on individual student and student organization ads. $4.00 per day for 15 words on non-student ads. $.15 each additional word. $.75 billing charge.
