Flick picks sparse this week
By Gerry Beltz
Rim Critic
With only three new releases this
week, traffic will be light on the new
release video shelves. However, along
with “National Lampoon’s Animal
House” coming to the StarShip 9 this
Friday, another classic Belushi film
is featured as the pick of the week.
“The Pagemaster” (G) —
Ewwww, even as a cartoon, Macaulay
Culkin is difficult to withstand.
A safety-prone kid (Mac) is so
concerned about personal safety that
he isn’t able to have fun. One night he
seeks refuge in a library, and (after
becoming animated) he meets the
characters of horror, comedy and ad
venture.
“Silent Fall” (R) — A psycho
logical thriller starring Richard
Dreyfuss, “Silent Fall” hits bottom.
A psychiatrist (Dreyfuss) is trying
to get into the mind of an autistic boy
who is the only witness to a brutal
murder, but he soon finds himself in
more trouble than he bargained for.
“Love Affair” (PG-13) — Real
life husband-and-wife Warren Beatty
and Annette Bening star in this re
make of the 1957 film “An Affair to
Remember.”
However, it sucks. “Love Affair”
turns into an ego vehicle for both
Beatty and Bening as soon as the
credits start rolling. The film cheats
anyone who spends their time or
money on it.
PICK OF THE WEEK — The
general rule is that “Saturday Night
Live” skits-tumed-movies will fail,
but there is an exception to every rule.
In this case, it’s “The Blues Broth
ers.”
Belushi and Dan Aykroyd team up
in the film that spawned success, a
cult following and world-famous
movie quotes.
Featuring a calvacade of musical
talent and surprise guest appear
ances, “The Blues Brothers” is sure
to put a smile on even the saddest of
faces.
Arnie Roth
“The Compleat Four Seasons”
American Gramaphone L.L.C.
Grade: A
Arnie Roth’s recording of
Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four
Seasons” will appeal to both clas
sical music fans and “Star Trek”
fans.
That’s right, “Star Trek.”
Roth enlisted the help of
Patrick Stewart, better known to
avid TV junkies and even the
occasional viewer as Captain
Jean-Luc Picard, to record the
most complete possible render
ing of Vivaldi’s work to date.
The easily recognizable
sounds of “The Four Seasons”
have been recorded numerous
times before, but Roth and
Stewart’s presentation includes a
number of sonnets that Vivaldi
had written to accompany the
music.
Those sonnets highlight and
emphasize the beauty and power
of Vivaldi’s already-magnificent
score. And Stewart’s distin
guished voice maximizes the ef
fect of the sonnets.
Each poem contains a vivid
description of the scenes played
out in the music. Stewart de
scribes snow-covered fields, leaf
filled forest floors and lightning
riddled rainstorms with tremen
dous intensity.
The visual imagery of these
words adds the strength of
poetry’s rhythm and eloquence
to the score. And, depending on
how the listener chooses to look
at it, Stewart ’ s presence may even
make the recording valuable
purely in the realm of collectible
kitsch.
But the performance alone of
Roth and his orchestra, Musica
Anima, make this recording
worth its price. From the soft and
joyful strains of spring to the
angry and violent bursts of
summer’s thunderstorms, the
musicians work diligently to cap
ture Vivaldi’s every desired mood
and scene. And they succeed.

Cronos

makeup artist provides more than
one chuckle duringhistime on screen.
It was quite a surprise to see
Perlman. I thought he dropped off the
face of the planet after the “Beauty
and the Beast” Valentine’s Day mara
thon on the Sci-Fi Channel. He’s not
bad as the swearing nephew who
wants a nose job, but he was defi
nitely better as Vincent.
Luppi is pretty good as the immor
tality-inflicted Gris, but he is too
middle-of-the-road. There isn’t any
real intensity brought to the role until
the end of the film, and by then, he
seems to be trying to make up for lost
time.
It should be again noted that this
film is quite gruesome and unrelent
ing with its violence, and several of
the scenes are not for the squeamish.
However, it is a breath of fresh air,
and is a great film to catch before it
disappears.
“Cronos” will play at the Mary
Riepma Ross Film Theater Sunday.

pared listening to a recorded classi
cal performance to watching a foot
ball game on television.
“You get all the camera angles
and all the commentary, sure,” Mallett
said. “But there’s nothing like the
thrill and excitement of being there
and seeing it live.”
Tickets for the performance are
$36, $32 and $28, and are half price
for students.
