Alvie Shepherd got a chance to
redeem himself in the Nebraska base
ball team’s game with Kansas Tues
day night.
In the Comhuskers’ 9-8 loss to
Missouri in 11 innings Saturday,
Shepherd came out of the bullpen
without control over his fastball and
squandered an 8-2 lead in the ninth
inning.
The 6-foot-7, 215-pound junior
from Hillside, 111., felt so bad after
the loss that he apologized to the
team in the clubhouse after the game.
“I told them that I owed this team
an apology because I came in and had
a job to do, and I didn’t get the job
done,” Shepherd said. “The day it
happened I was beside myself be
cause not doing my job cost us the
game.”
Although Shepherd felt like he let
the team down, he said his team
mates supported him.
“We’re a close team, and they told
me that they still had confidence in
me,” Shepherd said.

Shepherd carries more than just
the weight of being Nebraska’s go-to
guy and closer in the bullpen. He
carries the burden of being projected
as one of the top 10 college players
chosen in this summer’s draft.
“I spent most of the night lying in
bed thinking about how I was sup
posed to be this top prospect and so
good, and I still couldn’t hold the
lead,” Shepherd said. “All kinds of
thoughts ran through my head, but I
put them out of my mind Sunday
because you just can’t take it with
you on the field.
“All you can think about is throw
ing strikes.”
But Shepherd’s redemption didn’t
come on the mound Tuesday; it came
at the plate.
Shepherd, who played first base
against Kansas, stepped to the plate
with two outs and the bases loaded in
the bottom of the ninth inning and the
score tied 5-5, his disappointing per
formance Saturday was the furthest
thing from his mind.
“I just put that out of my mind and
went out there and did what needed to
be done,” Shepherd said. “I was just
looking for a fastball and waiting for
a strike, but he didn’t throw me one.”
Shepherd walked to force in the
winning run and gave the Huskers a
6-5 win.
“It feels good to get the win and
make up a little for what happened
Saturday,” Shepherd said. “It feels
good to get the job done.”
Men’s golf team must settle for sixth

The Nebraska men’s golf team
finished in a sixth-place tie at the
Diet Pepsi/Shocker Classic at
Tallgrass Country Club in Wichita,
Kan.
The Comhuskers finished with a
three-round total of 923, which tied
them with Illinois State.
Nebraska moved up from an eight
place finish on the first day with a
317 team score, which was the third
best team score of the day.
Iowa State captured the team title
with a score of 891.
Individually, Nebraska was led by
sophomore Trent Morrison, who fin
ished in a tie for 11th with a three
round score of 228. Morrison’s score
of 75 on Tuesday tied for the low
round of the day, along with Wichita
State’s Randy Freedman.
Husker Steve Reiter fired a 77 on
Tuesday and finished with a score of
229, good for a tie for 15th place.

putting the winning run on first with
no outs. Jayhawk right-hander Dan
Rude, who relieved Kansas starter
Jamie Splittorff and pitched a perfect
eighth inning, then retired Darin
Petersen on a bunt back to the mound.
Left fielder Darin Erstad, who went
2 for 4 on the night with two runs
scored, drew an intentional pass from
Rude. Nebraska center fielder Mel
Motley popped up to third, and Meyer
walked to load the bases with two
outs.
To the plate came first baseman
Alvie Shepherd. Shepherd said he
knew he didn’t need a hit to win the
game but only a walk. Four pitches
later, Shepherd had his walk, and
Dalton crossed the plate with the
winning run.
“I was pretty clear-headed as far
as what I needed to do,” Shepherd
said. “I was just looking for my pitch,
and he didn’t throw it, so I took four
balls and had the walk.”
Rude took the loss and fell to 1-2
on the season.
Sanders said he was pleased with
Nebraska’s discipline in the late in
nings. Early in the game, he said,
Nebraska didn’t show as much pa
tience, allowing Splittorff to handle
the Husker hitters with his change
up.
Catcher David Crain paced the
Huskers in the first six innings, going
2 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs.
Nebraska starter Bob Courter al
lowed five runs in five innings and
was relieved by Castro after pitching
to one batter in the sixth inning.
Castro, making only his second ap
pearance out of the bullpen this year,
picked up the win, improving to 2-2.
He pitched four scoreless innings,
giving up only two hits, while strik
ing out five and walking one.
