Newcomer to play Union tonight
By Joel Straucn
Senior Reporter
Contemporary folk singer Carrie
Newcomer has played at Carnegie
Hall and with Bonnie Raitt, but she’s
a newcomer to Lincoln.
“I like going to new places,” New
comer said. “I’m all excited to play in
Lincoln.”
Newcomer is touring in support of
her latest release, “Bird or the Wing,”
and will play at Nebraska Union to
night at 7:30. Tickets for the Univer
sity Program Council-sponsored con
cert are free for students and $3 for
others.
“Everything’s going great with the
album,” she said. “Good reviews are
coming back in, it’s doing well on
radio — I couldn’t be any happier.”
Newcomer has always been a cre
ative person and has looked for out
lets for her creativity, she said.
“I started out in visual art; that’s
what I went to school for,” she said.
“But after college, music was calling
louder.
“I love making music. There’s a
space and a need for real heart mu
sic.”
Newcomer sometimes brings
along a band, her Dorkestra, but usu
ally she plays alone, armed with just
her songs, w.t and amazing guitar
skill.
“It just depends on the show,” she
said. “This time, it’s just me.”
It’s difficult to label the type of
music she plays, Newcomer said, but

Carrie Newcomer will perform tonight in Nebraska Union.
she is definitely a crossover artist.
“The fact that I get up there with
just my guitar and play makes it folk,
but I’m a very contemporary artist as
well.”
The songs Newcomer plays are
self-written and the lyrics are strongly
influenced by her life experiences.
“I write about my political
thoughts, my spiritual feelings, my
daughter, even my dog.”
Although her songs are self-ex
pressive, Newcomer said, she tries
not to make them just journal writ
ing.
“I try to have a communication
process going on. If I write it well,
it’s not just my story, it’s your story.”
This type of interaction between
singer and audience makes a lot of
connections — and that’s what New
comer loves about performing.
“I can tell when I’m connecting by
people’s reactions,” she said. “When
you can see it in people’s eyes, or see
lovers holding hands, you know
you’ve struck a chord.”
Newcomer said her favorite reac
tion was at a show in Texas.
“When the show was over, a
woman came up to me with tears in
her eyes and gave me a big hug. She
said, ‘Thanks, that really helped’ and
then walked away.
