Unique team helps get UNL students involved By Erin Schulte Staff Reporter An innovative student involvement program exclusive to UNL is not only encouraging newcomers to become active on campus, it is also gaining national recognition. The Involvement Team, the only program of its type in the country, was honored last month at the National Association of Campus Activities con vention in California with the association’s Distinguished Student Development Program Award. The 12 University of Nebraska Lincoln students that make up the I Team give presentations and provide other services to students who might not know what is available to them at the university or who want to become more involved. Jason Vogel, a senior biological systems engineering major and I-Team assistant, said the I-Team used four main programs to urge students to be active on campus. One program consists of giving involvement presentations to Univer sity Foundations classes. I-Team mem bers give personal testimony about their experiences with campus activi ties and how those activities enhance college life. The I-Team provides an opportu nity guide to give students ideas on how they can use their strengths on campus. The testing is done in Uni versity Foundations recitation classes. Students who are interested in a program or organization but don’t know how to get involved are invited to attend a one-on-one consultation session with an I-Team member, Vogel said. The I-Team also offers workshops for campus groups, Vogel said. Groups can request workshops on topics, such as motivation, publicity or recruit ment, he said. The I-Team has given 5 8 presen tations this year in classes, residence “It's a real good way to give back to the university. ” ■ JASON VOGEL Senior biological systems engineering major halls and greek houses, Vogel said, but the groups receiving the presen tations aren’t the only ones who ben efit. “The I-Team members build com munications skills and leam how to think on their feet,” Vogel said. “It’s a real good way to give back to the university.” Cari Stanko, a sophomore biology major and I-Team member, agreed. “I joined the I-Team to become more connected on campus and to enhance my speaking skills,” Stanko said. Recruitment for the I-Team occurs during the spring semester. Students who have been involved in campus activities and are good speakers should apply. Denise Cradick, assistant director of Student Involvement, is credited with developing the pilot program for the I-Team. Seventy-one percent of students reported in post-presentation question naires that the I-Team gave them enough information to get involved, and 50 percent reported joining a club or organization on campus after hear ing the presentation, Cradick said. Cradick said the reason the pro gram worked was because of its per sonal touch and willingness to care and reach out to students. Cradick also said using student presentations insteadoffacultypresentationsworked better in reaching students and giving them a student perspective. 3?tl) Annual UNRA College Rodeo \ April 6, 1, 8 l U State Fair Park Colosseum B Thurs. 7:00pm College Night $3.00/ with ID f Fri. 7:00 pm Sat. 1:00 Matinee Sat. 7:00 pm Adults $6.00 Children 6-12 $3.00 Following evening performances Dance 10:00 - 1:00 am Featuring Aces High $5.00 Admission London $899 Paris $335 Frankfurt $389 Madrid $319 Rome $365 wesaecneviBy tan Omaha based cnaroixrtp punJese. 1 •800*8COUNCIL (1 »800»226»8624) NEBRASKA Base l.i l I JN U vs. Kansas TUESDAY April 4 - 7 p.m. WEDNESDAY April 5-3 p.m. Buck Beltzer Field Admission $2 - General admission Free - Children 12 & under Free - Adults 65 & older Free - Full time UNL student with photo I.D.
