third of the exhibit, Simmons said,
because the real miracle takes place
behind the scenes where a mechanical
reef of pipes and pumps keeps the
waters flowing while running up a
$250,000 a year electric bill.
The machines also make 20 tons of
snow for the Antarctic exhibit so the
penguins can feel at home — even in
the middle of June.
Chet Bates, keeper of the penguins,
makes sure the black-and-white birds
with colorful expressions are bated
with fishy breath.
The 20 king and 20 gentoo pen
guins are fed three times a day and kept
in an environment of a frigid 37 de
grees.
“They’re like little people,” she said,
as a king penguin waddled over to
investigate. “Each has its own person
ality.”
Above the viewing tunnel, curator
Dan Morris prepares to dive in and
scrub algae off the tank, but first he
and other divers have to round up the
sharks—the bigsharks with the sharp
teeth, that is.

The sharlqs will join the varieties of
puffins, penguins, rays, eels, anglefish,
anemones, corals, lobsters, jellyfish,
clownfish and hundreds of other
aquatic animals and plants to greet the
public this weekend.
Gov. Ben Nelson, Simmons and
donors Walter and Suzanne Scott will
cut a vine of kelp and fishnet at a
dedication ceremony Saturday at 9 a jn.
Admission is $7 for people ages 12
and over and $3.50 fbf ages 5 to 11.
There is no charge forchiklren 4 and
under.
