Tommy Boy needs to grow up Filin: ‘Tommy Boy” Director: Peter Segal Stars: Chris Farley, David Spade and Bo Derek Rating: PG Grade: D Five Words: “SNL” films can’t cut it. 1 Joel Strauch "Cfffic Saturday Night Live stars Chris Farley and David Spade try to make it as a comedy team in “Tommy Boy.” Obviously they weren’t around when the responses from ‘Trapped in Paradise” and “Billy Madison” came back or they would have realized that the days of great “SNL” movies were over. Sure, you get a gem like “Wayne’s World” once in a while, but it used to be that you could depend on hilarious comedies from those weekend wits. The National Lampoon Vacation movies, “Ghostbusters,” “Die Blues Brothers,”—the list used to go on and on. Nowadays, audiences (the limited ones that still show up) are prepared for disappointment when they sit and watch a frill-length movie that would be a lot more funny and bearable as a 3-minute sketch. The latest failure is about Tommy Callahan (Farley), a college graduate after only seven years and a D+ aver age (you probably know a few of these) who returns to his Sandusky, Ohio, Bowers Continued from Page 12 Russell Thompson his wife. “It’s a real joyful time,” he said. “ W i tteRaSf,ther»*b fiu lonetiHessrl^n so lucky to be in love at this point in my life. It’s like a fairy tale. ■ Courtesy of Paramount Pictures David Spade and Chris Farley star in “Tommy Boy,” which openstoday. home to run his father s business. Callahan is unprepared for the ruth less efforts of his stepmother to buy out Callahan Auto Parts. He enlists the aid of his father’s former right-hand man, Richard Hayden (Spade) to take to the road and attempt to save the company and the entire town. The movie abounds with cliched slapstick and lackluster acting (as if ' that’s a surprise).. The flick had its moments, but they were few and far between. Farley’s physical comedy and Spade’s dry hu mor, normally hilarious on “SNL,” just got old and died after about the first 20 minutes of the movie. ‘Tommy Boy,” and the latest “SNL” cast, have a lot of growing up to do. “I never should have let her go,” he said. Bowers said he and his new bride preferred to drive on this tour. “It’s magic to look across and not only be in loyfc with the person, but also singing aNHslaying^with them. Words can’t cover how happy I am these days.” Starkweathers Continued from Page 12 The Sissies will open for the Starkweathers at Knickerbockers. “We have only- playedb at Knickerbockers' irflffeln.
