It’s interesting that twenty-something Generation X bands were picked to cover the tunes of the definitive 1970s arena rock band. These bands grew up with Zep pelin in heavy rotation on the al bum-oriented rock Stations, but they profess a purist rock ethic which shuns Zeppelinesque larger-than life epics. Thus, the bands on this collection stick to Zeppelin jams instead of Zeppelin epics. The album kicks off with 4 Non Blondes covering one of Zeppel in ’ s heaviest jams, “Misty Mountain Hop.” Linda Perry lays out a flaw less Zep-scream that calls to mind the vocal acrobatics that defined Robert Plant’s mid-’70s sound. Dave Navarro, former Jane’s Ad diction guitarist, cops the signature Jimmy Page ri ff and throws on some ’90s distortion. Stone Temple Pilots tackle “Dancing Days” but mellow it out with acoustic guitars and a lazy beat. This version sounds surpris ingly like the acoustic “Dancing Days” that Zeppelin performed in concert. Blind Melon follows the 4 Non Blondes route of throwing Zep screams onto distorted guitar for their version of “Out on die Tiles.” The Blind Melon arrangement has a heavier edge than the Zeppelin version, taking on the feel of “The Immigrant Song.” The low point of this album is Helmet’s version of “Custard Pie.” The vocals sound like a drunken sailor and include coughs and grunts and bodily noises. Clearly Helmet is mocking Led Zeppelin and hav ing a laugh at Atlantic’s expense. Robert Plant appears at the end to provide his own tribute in a barely-recogni zable “Down by the Seaside.” He is backed by Tori Amos who adds atonal moaning to Plant’s rambling, tuneless vocals. It is a limp ending to the collection, leaving the listener with the feeling that the wild screams and blaring guitar of Zeppelin’s yesteryear have passed into the possession of younger bands. — Jason Gildow • We buy; sell and trade • We pay the most..An CASH! • We guarantee ours 100% • The largest selection of new and used CDs and tapes I THE NEBRASKA CITY UNION, EAST UNION, AND CULTURE CENTER ARE NOW ACCEPTING OFFICE SPACE APPLICATIONS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 1995-1996. N.W.A., which stands for Niggaz Wit’ Attitude, scored a hit in 1988 with “Straight Outta Compton.” The album’s foul-mouthed, hardcore themes knocked softer rap off the charts and sold more than 2 million copies, despite lack of radio play. N.W. A’s follow-up record, 199 l’s “Niggaz4Life,” sold 954,000 copies in its first weeks of release to become the first hardcore rap album to hit No. 1 on the charts. N.W.A. later broke up amidst ar tistic and money disputes but proved hugely influential. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre went on to successful solo ca reers. “As long as you got gangstas and people going through all this shit, the music will be around,” Wright said in 1994. Wright also had a solo album, 1993’s “It’s On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa.” Wright and Tomika Wood married recently. The couple has a 1 -year-old son, Dominick, the youngest of his children.
