Dolores (Kathy Bates) was cleared of any charge after her husband’s “acci dental” death 20 years before. But now her employer Vera Donovan (Judy Parfitt) has passed away under equally mysterious circumstances, and Dolores is again a suspected murderer. Her daughter, Selena St. George (Jennifer Jason Leigh), has been try ing to forget her upbringing in the small remote town of Little Tall Is land, Maine, but has to face her per sonal demons when she returns to help her mother. Based on a book by Stephen King, the movie does a surprisingly good job capturing Dolores’ feelings and emotions. The film’s ending was also changed and the filmmakers left out the book’s most dramatic and frightening scene. Overall, this movie made the transi tion from King book to big screen fairly intact. The acting was a key part of this success. Leigh was good in the role of the daughter who had to turn to alcohol and drugs to deal with her father’s death and her mother’s possible role in it. Christopher Plummer was excep tional as Detective John Mackey, the investigator in Dolores’ first murder charge who becomes obsessed with putting her away. But Bates made the movie. She is a fabulous actress who seems to have a knack for King movies (her Academy Award for “Misery” springs to mind). She captures the bitter essence of a woman who just doesn’t give a damn about anyone except her daughter and 178 Pregnancy 180 Printing & Copying - 182 Recycling 02 Appliances 183 Religious 05 Bicycles 185 Rentals 10 Books 188 Tanning 13 Clothing 190 Tattooing 16 Computers 193 Travel 20 Furniture 195 Typing & Resumes 30 Jewelry - 40 Misc. The cinematography was nothing short of eerie. Weird camera angles, trippy skylines and a fantastic presen tation of a total solar eclipse made this movie a feast for the eyes. “Dolores Claiborne” is not the frightfest that many have come to ex pect of Stephen King movies, but it’s an excellent tale of justice served chilled with a side of intrigue and suspense. now and used bicycles, expert repair on all brands.
