Quartet to feature marimba music Group will perform Friday at Kimball Hall By Jeff Hampl _ Slaff Reporter The Manhattan Marimba Quar tet will perform Friday at Kimball Recital Hall. The group was formed 16 years ago by students of James Preiss, an instructor of percussion at thef-Man hattan School of Music. Preiss joined the group in 1981 after one of its original members left. William Trigg and Kory Grossman, both original members, are still with the quartet. William Ruyle joined the group in 1985. The marimba is a keyboard in strument similar to the xylophone. It is played by striking wooden bars with rubber-headed mallets. “It’s more versatile,” Priess said. “The marimba sound and pitch is lower than that of a xylophone.” The quartet will perform pieces from musicians such as Villa-Lo bos, Bach and George Gershwin. It will also perform Nicaraguan and Guatemalan folk songs. It is appropriate that the group will be performing folk songs, Preiss said, because the marimba is the national instrument of Guate mala and is popular throughout South America. The quartet’s repertoire also in cludes medieval and Renaissance music, Irish folk songs and works by Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. The group easily performs such a wide range of musical styles be^ cause it is one of the few profes sional marimba ensembles in the world, Preiss said. “The nice part about our quartet is that everything is new,” Preiss said. “Nothing’s been done before. We like to investigate.” “We’ve always? viewed the group as a classical chamber en semble with a twist,” he said. “We all have backgrounds in improvi sation, drums, jazz and rock and roll.” The quartet will perform at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for non-stu dents and $3 for students. Ross Continued from Page 9 “We hope to give films that ordi . narily would never be seen in Lincoln a chance,” he said. The smaller auditorium also will be used by the UNL film studies de partment at least three days each week, Ladely said. Those screenings will continue to be free and open to the public. “We hope that this will allow ex pansion and improvement of the film studies department,” he said. I An added attraction to the theater will be what Ladely described as an “upscale concession stand.” Discs Continued from Page 9 available for rental, said Bruce Hahn, a Video Station spokesper son. Although there are five differ ent Video Station outlets in Lin coln, Hahn said the Old Cheney location was the only one that would carry movies on a laser-disc for mat. TheVideoZone,5501 Holdrege St., also has recently added laser disc movies for rental. Manager Wayne Jackson could not be reached for comment. Both Hahn and Abel said new home-video formats were being developed, including a 5-inch disc (current discs are 12 inches). It is difficult to go back to watch ing regular VHS movies once you have experienced a laser-disc movie, Abel said. : -V “I guarantee you, once you watch one of those with a surround sound system at home,” Abel said, “it’s hard to go back to a tape player. “Once you hear true surround sound, you will be devastated.” retail # fashion management opportunities THE BUCKIaE, a progressive fashion retailer for young men and women is looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated professionals to join our Retail Management Team as we expand our organization.
