Husker record goes to 4-2
after weekend tournament

Mel Motley’s three-run home run
in the seventh inning gave Nebraska a
6-5 win over 14th-ranjced Oklahoma
State Sunday in the Arthur Gallagher
Tournament;
The win over the Cowboys improved
the Comhuskers’ record to 4-2, with a
3-2 record in the tournament.
Junior Alvie Shepherd picked up
his second save, but he had to work
out of a jam in the top of the ninth
inning.
With runners on first and third,
Shepherd forced Oklahoma State to
hit into a double play to win the game.
In their opening game Friday, the
Huskers dropped an 8-4 decision to
New Mexico State. With Nebraska up
3-1, the Aggies exploded for seven
runs in the top of the fifth inning to
seal the win.
Later that day, Nebraska rebounded
with a 10-2 win over Southern Utah.
Nebraska junior right-hander Craig
Sanders went the whole way, allowing
just four hits and striking out seven for
the win. Freshman first baseman Todd
Sears hit his first career home run in a
four-run fourth inning.
On Saturday, the Huskers split two
games with San Diego State. The
Huskers won the first game 6-5 when
Sears hit a game-winning home run
in the seventh inning.
Mens’ golf team finishes 13th
in South Florida Invitational

finished in 13th place at the South
Florida Men’s Golf Invitational held
in Tampa, Fla., Friday through Sun
day.

Husker softball
still undefeated

Last year, the Nebraska soft
ball team started off the season
with a loss against Oklahoma in
the first game of the season.
After eight games this year,
the Comhuskers are still unde
feated and off to their best start
ever.
The Huskers swept two
games from Creighton Satur
day in Omaha.
In the first game, junior
Stacie Stafford picked up her
fifth win of the season in a 6-4
win. Freshman shortstop Ali
Viola went 2 for 3 with a double
and a home run.
Freshman Angela Black
wood lifted her record to 3-0
with a 5-0 shutout in the second
game. She allowed just four hits.
The shutout was Blackwood’s
second of the season.
Freshman Jenny Smith
pounded a three-run home run
in Nebraska’s four-run sixth
inning.
The Huskers will try to con
tinue their winning streak at the
Roadrunner Tournament in Las
Cruces, N.M. The tournament
will go from Thursday to Sun
day.
Swimmers
win, lose
team titles

The reign is over.
The Nebraska men’s swimming
team’s 15-year monopoly on the Big
Eight Championships ended with a
third-place finish this weekend.
The Comhuskers finished behind
Iowa State and Kansas.
The women’s swimming team,
however, took home its second con
secutive title. The Huskers won six
out of seven events and finished sec
ond in the other.
Nebraska’s Penny Heyns, who is
the nation’s top-ranked 100-and 200
breaststroker, was named as one of
the three Big Eight outstanding per
formers for the season.
Regular season
ends with win

The Nebraska women’s basketball
team finished the regular season Sun
day with a 62-51 victory at Iowa State.
The Comhuskers, 13-13 and 4-10
in the Big Eight, were led by Anna
DeForge, who scored a team-high 15
points.
Nebraska led the last-place Cy
clones 35-16 at halftime before Iowa
State outscored Nebraska 35-27 in the
second half.
The Huskers will play Oklahoma
in the first round of the Big Eight
Tournament at Salina, Kan., Satur
day.
