Cultural films to be featured Filmmaker plans visit, discussion for this weekend By Gerry Beltz Senior Reporter The films of Pratibha Parmar will be showcased at the Mary Riepma Ross Film Theater today through Sunday. In addition, Saturday’s and Sunday’s screenings will feature an appearance by Parmar herself, where she will discuss her work with the audiences. Parmar’s film “Warrior Marks,” a documentary on female genital mutilation, won international ac claim and was presented by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker. Parmar’s work has been shown in many countries and at interna tional film festivals. Parmar, an independent film maker, was also the 1993 recipient of Frameline Award, an award that is presented to an individual who has made a substantial and excep tional contribution to lesbian and gay media. Frameline also orga nizes the world’s largest gay and lesbian film festival every year in San Francisco. Parmar is a writer, anti-racism activist, filmmaker and artist. Her works have been featured at the Ross Theater several times in the past, and this week’s showings will include two new films she made in 1994 — “The Colour of Britain” and “Memsahib Rita.” Films and videos to be shown will include: # “The Colour of Britain,” a documentary looking at leading British Asian artists. # “Memsahib Rita,” a different type of “ghost” story that explores questions including mixed-race identity, bereavement and racist violence. # “Bhangra Jig”: A four-minute video about how young Asian people in Scotland celebrate desire and self-pride through dance and music. # “Double the Trouble, Twice the Fun”: A documentary drama exploring the experiences of dis abled lesbians and gay men. # “Warrior Marks”: A docu mentary about female genital mu tilation in Africa, presented by Alice Walker. # “Sari Red”: A video poem that examines the effect of the everpresent threat of violence upon the lives of Asian women in both private and public spheres. # “A Place of Rage”: A docu mentary film highlighting the lives of African-American women and their role in the civil-rights movement, focusing on Angela Davis, June Jordan and Alice Walker. • “Flesh and Paper”: life and writing of Indian lesbian poet and writer Suniti Namjoshi. • “Memory Pictures”: A video exploring photographic represen tations of issues of migration and identity. • “Emergence”: A video fea turing black and third-world women artists and poets, including Audre Lorde, Sutapa Biswas, Mona Hatoum and Mei Ling Jin. • “Khush”: A film celebrating the lives of South Asian lesbians and gay men in Britain and in India. A total of 11 different works will be shown — each ranging between four and 54 minutes in length — and those 11 will be divided into four different pro grams, with three films and videos in each program (“Warrior Marks” will be in two different programs). Complete schedules are available at the box office. Admission is $5, $4 for stu dents with identification and $3 for senior citizens, children and members ofthe Friends of the Mary Riepma Ross Film Theater.
