Lemming Continued from Page 8 what happens. Right now, we just go out and play.” - The tend has been playing its angst driven rock to home crowds at the Maintenance Shop in Ames, Iowa, and on the road for more than two years. “We really mix it up,” Wolfe said. “We put in a couple of dark songs, some metal crunch and even get funky now and then.” Roth said Lemming’s live perfor mances got the band noticed. “Our live show is very energetic,” he said. “It’s very fast-paced.” Lemming plans an energetic show tonight at Knickerbocker’s with Soterian Frolic. There will be a $3 cover charge. Voyager Continued from Page 8 The acting is really solid for a “Star Trek” pilot. Mulgrew especially is excellent, putting a feminine slant on the role of the captain. She is powerful and resourceful but also caring and emotional. Chakotay (Robert Beltran), an American Indian captain of the Maquis ship, becomes the Voyager’s first officer. His role is rather limited in the pilot, but promises great devel opment. Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) is a smart-mouthed merce nary who joins the Voyager on its virgin mission because he’s offered enough. - Tuvok (Tim Russ), a Vulcan spy for the Federation and the Starfleet Tactical/Security Officer for the Voy ager, is almost a combination of Worf and Spock. The rest of the crew is composed of original members, Maquis and two aliens that the Voyager meets in the pilot episode. The show’s special effects are bet ter than either “Next Generation” or “Deep Space 9.” It might be that the producers wanted to have a good show ing on the pilot, but the space battles and effects in the Badlands are worthy of a big-budget film. Although it’s not perfect, “Voy ager” is definitely Star Trek, and it should be a suitable replacement for those Trekkies who can no longer get their “Next Gen” fix. , Trekkies Continued from Page 8 Many viewers said they were pleased with Kate Mulgrew as the Voyager’s female captain, Kathryn Janeway. “They handled her role pretty well,” Mechanic said. “They didn’t throw it in your face.” Matamoros said that Captain Janeway had a lot more humanity than “Star Trek: The Next Genera tion” Captain Jean-Luc Picard. However, Johnson said he was con cerned the show had too many (nine) main characters. Marcus Shomey, a freshman chem istry major, didn’t get to see the pilot Wednesday night but plans on watch ing it Saturday. -- “I watched the special on the Sci-Fi channel, and I thought that it looked pretty good,” he said. Shomey said he was worried the show would have too many alien char acters. “The chemistry of past crews, like on ‘Next Gen,’ was mostly human, and that was great,” he said. “Right now, all these aliens don’t appeal to me.” People who caught the pilot were split on how regularly they would catch the series. Brian Fomes, a sophomore En glish major, said he would watch the show every week. But Matamoros wasn’t as excited about the show. “It won’t be as high on my list as ‘90210,’ but I’ll probably try to catch a few episodes,” he said. take Kdpldn and get a higher score... McIntyre Bantam Books Once again, another author has penned a successful Star Wars story. This time we find the gang all settled within the New Republic, 10 years after “Return of the Jedi.” Han and Leia are married, and their twins, Jaina and Jacen, are 5. Their young est son, Anakin, is 3 (and a half, as he always corrects). The story line is broken into three parts, and each part has a dominant character. The first focuses on Leia. While on a diplomatic mission to Munto Codru, the children are kidnapped. Despite reassurances from the alien govern ment, Leia pursues the kidnappers on her own with the help of Chewbacca Many accidents are caused by car drivers who didn’t see the cyclists. The second story line follows Jaina, the eldest (three minutes older than her brother). She has been taken by an Imperial leftover named Hethrir and placed with other stolen children. Hethrir is organizing the Empire Reborn and training Force-strong children to help him. Jaina spends her time figuring a way out using her weak Force powers. The last story line, which seems unrelated for much of the novel, is from Han’s point of view. He, Luke and C3PO, have gone to the fringe world of Crseih Station after C3PO receives an encoded message. Luke is hoping to find a lost Jedi, while Han takes a vacation from his political life in the New Republic. Of course all of the groups eventu al ly converge and become one big f"~ 1 ■ ■ happy family. McIntyre has done a good job get ting in the heads of the three key players. The mind switch — from frantic mother to burned-out space pirate to 5-year-old girl — is done quite well, although Jaina seems a little young to be breaking away from her captors. As always, there are Force-using bad guys, weird new aliens and the characters’ standard catch phrases. The best and worst part of new “Star Wars” stories is the formula of imitat ingand following“Star Wars” founder George Lucas. “The Crystal Star” has fairly origi nal ideas, is well written and, of course, has the characters that everyone loves.
