Tristan Ludlow (Brad Pitt) and Susannah (Julia Ormond) share a mutual ogle in “Legends of the Fall.” Cast clicks in tragic ‘Legends’ The Facts Movie: “Legends of the Fall” Rating: R Stars: Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn Director: Edward Zwick Grade: B Five Words: Tragic film, depressing but compelling. By Joel Strauch Senior Reporter With enough tragedy for a Shakespearean play, “Legends of the Fall” doesn’t have a happy ending, or a happy middle, or a happy beginning, for that matter. But it is well-filmed and well-acted and presents an enticing tale. Col. William Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins) retires from the Army after he fails to change the military’s ill-treatment of Ameri can Indian tribes. Ludlow builds a ranch in Mon tana and raises his three sons with out the help of his wife. When the youngest son, Samuel (Henry Thomas), brings his beau tiful bride-to-be, Susannah (Julia Ormond), back to the Ludlow ranch, problems arise with his older brothers, Alfred (Aidan Quinn) and Tristan (Brad Pitt). After Susannah arrives and the three brothers enlist in World War I, the Ludlow family meets with tragedy after tragedy. It seems that no one can ever find happiness or contentment, and everyone’s unrest revolves around the middle brother Tristan and his wild, untamable spirit. Aidan Quinn is very good as the willful elder brother Alfred, whose own political ambitions conflict with his father’s hatred of the gov ernment. Julia Ormond is exceptional in her role as the idealistic Susannah, a woman from the East who ends up touching each brother in a dif ferent way. And Brad Pitt, whoisnowpopu lar enough to get top billing over Anthony Hopkins, lives up to his reputation. He nearly perfectly cap tures the essence of the indomi table and unpredictable Tristan. But it is Hopkins who puts in the best performance. His portrayal of the rigid Colonel, a man whose sense of equality and justice is frightfully ahead of his time, is captivating. Hopkins gives his all to the role, getting even better after the powerful cavalry officer is re duced to a hobbling, near-speech less old man. The movie was well-filmed, showing a wonderful contrast be tween the natural splendors of iso lated Montana country and the horrific trenches of war-torn France. There were also many ec centriceameraangLes,andlighting adding to the film’s drama. Although the plot was very en grossing, it seemed arfti-climactic and dragged a bit in the latter half of the film. But it jumped back in there and gave the audience an ending pro found enough to tie the film in a sensible knot.
