Allen sent a letter Tuesday to Law Dean Harvey Perlman requesting a debate. At issue, Allen wrote, was Perlman’s guest newspaper opinion in the Omaha World-Herald that said Chancellor Graham Spanier was “forthright to a fault.” Allen told Perlman he had “suffi cient information to show that (he was) not correct.” Perlman denied Allen’s request Wednesday in a letter. “I believe such a public debate would be inappropriate and not in the best interest of the university,” Perlman wrote. “To conduct such an evaluation by public debate, in my opinion, would be unfair to the individual and a departure from how a great univer sity conducts its affairs,” Perlman wrote. Perlman refused comment to the Daily Nebraskan on Wednesday. The response was a disappointment to Allen, who has criticized Spanier as being ineffective, dishonest and un able to perform under pressure. “The public has a right to know what is really happening,” Allen said. ASUN vote opposes new parking garage By Melanie Brand* rt Staff Reporter Applause rose from Alpha Phi sorority members and alumni after ASUN Wednesday night voted 15-7 with four abstentions to oppose the construction of a parking garage east of the Ne orasica union. University of Nebraska-Lin coln administra tors proposed the site because it was the only location that would pay for itself. Current members and alumni of Alpha Phi sorority, which is located next to the site, are opposed to the plan. About 65 Alpha Phi alumni and current members went to the meeting to voice their opinions on the pro posed garage. Stacy Lovelace, member of Alpha Phi and former ASUN senator, said the theme of the university’s pro posal was that the garage could be funded by student and faculty/staff parking permits and money from park ing meters. “If this garage wouldn’t fly, who’s to say parking permits aren’t going to inch up a little bit every year to help cover the cost of this,” she said. “I agree that a parking garage is needed,” Lovelace said, “however, I think there are so many cons with having it here — the contradiction of green space and the extraordinarily high amount of pedestrian traffic that is in this area.” Paul Carlson, interim vice chan cellor for business and finance, said during the meeting there was no con flict with pedestrian or vehicular traf fic east of the Union. Lovelace said other concerns of sorority members were that the four and one-half story garage would be come an overnight shelter for the homeless and that it would attract Peeping Toms. Monte Horst, ASUN representa tive to the Academic Planning Com mittee, said a solid wall facing the sorority was considered in the plan to alleviate sororitymembers’ concerns about Peeping Toms. Not everyone at the meeting, how ever, opposed the proposed garage. David Jurgens, College of Jour nalism and Mass Communications senator, said there had been a need for visitor parking since 1967. He also said visitors would be contribut ing money to the university through the garage. “They’re the ones we need to treat right,” he said. “If not, maybe we won’t get the money (from them). I find it very hard to believe this isn’t the right place for this.” Parking Problems? Need a Place to Park? Park by Day $1.00 Park by Month $25.00 Don’t FigRt For Parking!
