Jeff Haller/DN Kim Magnuson, left, Teresa Cecava and Lupe Ramirez begin to clean water dumped Into Avery Hall late Wednesday night. The water leak was caused by human error, officials said, which caused an estimated $100,000 In damage. Flood, asbestos closes Avery By Matthew Waite Senior Reporter The release of several hundred gallons of water into Avery Hall late Wednesday night, and the discovery of asbestos in the debris, closed the building for classes today. Richard Hoback, University of Nebraska-Lincoln maintenance man ager, said human error caused the flood and an estimated $100,000 in damage. The damage in Avery was con tained to the west wing of the build ing, where chemical engineering classrooms and offices are housed. Floors were wet, ceiling tiles were damaged and several rooms were blocked off with asbestos warning signs on the doors. Hoback said the most expensive damage was to several computers that were in| offices and to the ceil ing of the chemical engineering de partment. He said along with the clean-up, many ceiling tiles would have to be replaced. The flood in Avery was the result of a change at the chilled water plant at 14th and W streets, Hoback said. He said the chilled water pipes that go to all city campus buildings were drained and refilled Wednesday morning, except for Avery, which was forgotten. Hoback said the Avery pipes were not filled until Wednesday evening. He said a valve was left open in the attic of Avery, causing the flood. There are nearly 100 buildings and 300 valves on city campus, Hoback said, with a trained staff of eight to check them. Hoback said the air in the building was being tested for asbestos, but results of those tests would be de layed until the samples could be sent to New York. The geography and journalism wing of Avery, which was not dam aged, could be re-opened as soon as Friday, Hoback said. However, he said, the chemical engineering wing would not be open until Monday or Tuesday. More investigation would have to be done to see if more asbestos would have to be removed from offices, Hoback said. He said if more remov als were needed, they would not de lay the opening of the chemical engi neering wing. Now At Ben Simons... Your Estee Lauder 7-Piece Gift.
